Mayville, N.D. – Jordan Zrust converted a 3-point play with 12 seconds left in the game to give the Comets a 59-58 victory over the Bruins. The Comets move to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
The Bruins and Comets finished the first three minutes tied at seven before Bellevue finished the rest of the quarter on a 9-0 and took a 16-7 lead heading into the second quarter. MSU would start the second quarter 15-2 run that lasted over seven minutes. During the run, Zrust had three points and Voegeli had four points. The Comets were up one point heading into the intermission.
The Bellevue Bruins went on an 8-0 run in the third quarter that lasted over two minutes. MSU would trail by four points heading into the final quarter. The Comets were trailing by nine-points with 4:36 left in the fourth quarter before they trimmed the Bruin lead to four with 2:21 left in the game. Jordan Zrust cut the Bruin lead to two with 25 seconds left. Jordan Zrust was fouled on her made layup to tie the game at 58. She made the free-throw with 12 seconds left to take a one-point lead to comeback and beat the Bruins.
Mayville State finished the game with 41.2 percent from the field, 35.0 percent from behind the 3-point line, 71.4 percent from the free-throw line. They also finished with four points off turnovers, five second-chance points, and four bench points. Jordan Zrust finished the game with 23 points, three rebounds, two blocks, and one steal.
Kayla Rocholl drilled four three-pointers for the Comets, finishing with 14 points, five rebounds, one assist, and one block. Danneka Voegeli recorded a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks, and one steal. CJ Decker played 38 minutes in the victory, finishing with six points, five assists, and two rebounds.
The Comets are back in action next weekend as they host Valley City State and Dickinson State on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game will start at 5:30 pm against the Vikings and 3:00 pm against the Blue Hawks.
