Mayville, N.D. – The Comets outscored the Vikings by 11 in the fourth quarter to come back and defeat the Vikings by a final score of 83-77.
The Vikings and Comets traded baskets early in the contest as the game was tied at eight with 5:32 left in the first quarter. The Comets scored the next seven points and jumped out to a 15-8 with 4:39 left in the quarter. After MSU gained a 12-point lead, the Vikings finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the Comet lead to six.
After trailing six to start the second quarter, the Vikings would tie the game at 31 with 2:36 left and take the lead shortly after. The Comets were outscored 12-24 in the second quarter and were trailing by six heading into the intermission. Valley City extended the lead to 14-points during the third quarter before the Comets cut the lead to five heading into the final quarter.
Mayville State started the fourth quarter 9-1 run to take a two-point lead. The Comets would jump out to a seven-point lead with 3:29 left and would not allow the Vikings any closer, as they win by a final of 83-76. The Comets would finish the game shooting 46.9 percent from the field, 41.2 percent from the 3-point line, recorded a season-high 52 rebounds, and dished out 15 assists.
They also finished with 13 points off turnovers, eight second-chance points, and nine bench points. Jordan Zrust finished with a double-double this evening tallying 25 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. Danneka Voegeli was one rebound short of a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. CJ Decker finished the game one point short of the double-double with nine points, 11 rebounds, and five assists. Erin Walcker finished the game with a career-high 16 points, three rebounds, and two blocks.
The Comets are back in action tomorrow afternoon at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse to face the Blue Hawks. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm against Dickinson State.
