Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Women's Basketball team defeated the Blue Hawks Saturday afternoon by a final score of 64-51. The Comets move to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
The Comets started the game on a 9-2 run that lasted over the first seven minutes of the first quarter, Danneka Voegeli scored four points during that run. The Comets would finish the first quarter up 9-6. Dickinson State would tie the game at 11 early in the second quarter and take a five-point lead with 4:51 left in the second quarter. The Comets would finish the half on a 10-5 run to tie the game at 24 heading into the intermission.
Mayville State would start the third quarter on a 10-2 run that lasted two minutes to jump out to an eight-point advantage. After a 3-point basket by the Blue Hawks, Mayville State would go on another run of 12-2 run to get their biggest lead at 15. The Blue Hawks would cut the lead to single digits a couple of times in the fourth quarter, but the Comets held off any late comebacks from DSU and picked up the 64-51 victory.
MSU would finish today's game shooting 43.3 percent from the field, 54.5 percent from behind the arc, tallied 42 rebounds, and dished out 12 assists on 26 made field goals. The Comets also finished with 10 points off turnovers, 13 second-chance points, and eight bench points. Jordan Zrust tallied her second double-double of the weekend, finishing with 19 points, 10 rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal.
CJ Decker was also in double figures with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Erin Walcker tallied nine points, four rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal. Kayla Rocholl also finished with nine points and one rebound. Danneka Voegeli recorded eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. Taylor Dean and Heather Elfering each tallied three points off the bench for the Comets.
The Comets will face the same two teams next weekend on the road. First, they travel to Dickinson State to face the Blue Hawks Friday starting at 6:30 CST/5:30 MST and Saturday at Valley City State starting at 3:00 PM.
