Four Comets score in double figures in loss to Blue Hawks

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Women's basketball team dropped a double-overtime game to Dickinson State by a final of 84-90. The Comets drop to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

Mayville State and Dickinson State were tied at four early in the first quarter before an 11-0 run that lasted over the next five minutes. The Comets were leading by six heading into the second quarter 19-13. Dickinson State took a four-point lead late in the second quarter off two free-throws from the Blue Hawks. The Comets trailed the Dickinson State by seven heading into the intermission.

With 3:55 left in the third quarter, Jordan Zrust knocked down two free-throws to tie the game at 40. Mayville State trailed by five heading into the final quarter. The Comets trailed the Blue Hawks by nine in the fourth quarter with 7:47 left. Mayville State would start a run over the next four minutes and would tie the game at 60 with 2:52.

Erin Walcker hit a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left in the game to take a 3-point lead. The Blue Hawks would tie the game at 67 with 20 seconds. After a Comet turnover, Dickinson State had a chance to win the game, but the shot was blocked by Zrust to force overtime. In Overtime, MSU started the extra period scored the first three points.

Dickinson held leads of two with less than a minute left in the overtime session. The Comets were down two with 16 seconds left in the first overtime, Erin Walcker hit 2-of-4 free throws to tie the game at 81 and force the second overtime. Dickinson State outscored the Comets by five in the second overtime to defeat the Comets 89-84.

Mayville State finished the game shooting 38.4 percent from the field, 20.8 percent from behind the 3-point line, and 23-of-39 from the free-throw line. The Comets also finished the game with 46 points in the paint, 20 points off turnovers, 10 second-chance points, and 16 bench points. Jordan Zrust finished the game with a double-double with 25 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks, and one steal.

Erin Walcker finished the game with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals. Danneka Voegeli also finished with 15 points, three rebounds, one block, and one steal. CJ Decker was the final Comet in double figures with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Heather Elfering tallied nine points, five rebounds, and two steals.

The Comets are back in action tomorrow afternoon at Valley City State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm in Valley City State.
