Forest City, IA – The Mayville State University Men's Basketball team out-scored the Warriors by nine in the second half to pick up an 87-83 road victory Friday night. The Comets move to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in NSAA play.
The biggest lead for both teams was five through the first eight minutes of the game as it was tied at 17 before the Warriors went on a mini 5-0 run to give them a five-point lead. MSU would take a 27-26 lead a few minutes later after a bucket from Goodwin. Waldorf would finish the last six minutes of the half, after Goodwin knocked down a free-throw to take a one-point lead, on a 13-7 run to take a five-point lead into the intermission.
The Warriors started the second half fast, with a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 11. After a 3-pointer from Ketchel, WU would extend the lead to 13 with 16:29 left in the game. With 15:43 left in the game, MSU would make their comeback as they produced a 12-0 run to cut the Waldorf lead to two. Franklin tallied five points during that run.
MSU would tie the game at 65 after a two-point bucket from Joseph with 8:46 left in the second half. Waldorf took a one-point lead with 3:22 left in the game on a free-throw. Joseph and Gieske scored the next eight points to take a five-point lead with 1:09 left. MSU would hit 6-of-6 free-throws to finish the game and give them an 87-83 victory.
The Comets finished the game shooting 43.3 percent from the field, 45.2 percent from behind the 3-point line, 15-of-18 from the free-throw line, and 37 rebounds. MSU would also tally 24 points in the paint, 32 bench points, two fast break points, and 16 assists on 29 made field goals.
John Ketchel led the Comets tonight with 17 points, two rebounds, and six assists. Latrelle Franklin scored 14 points in the victory, he also had four rebounds, five assists, and two steals. The final starter in double figures was Xavier Towne, he finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and one block. Iker Cruz tallied eight points and nine rebounds in the victory.
Winder Joseph scored 14 points and one steal to lead the bench tonight. Thomas Gieske recorded nine points, one rebound, and one steal off the bench. Keiron Goodwin tallied six points and five rebounds as the final starter in the lineup.
The Comets are back in action tomorrow evening, as they continue the road trip to Viterbo University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm against the V-Hawks.
