Comets complete the weekend sweep at Viterbo Saturday

La Crosse, WI – Mayville State picked up a 10-point victory over the V-Hawks Saturday afternoon by a final of 87-78. The Comets move to 6-1 on the regular season and 3-0 in conference play.

The Comets and V-Hawks traded baskets for the first seven minutes of the game before Mayville State took a four-point lead after an Iker Cruz 3-point basket. Latrelle Franklin extended the Comets lead to seven with 6:10 left in the half. Thomas Gieske drilled a corner three-pointer with 16 seconds in the half to give the Comets a 5-point lead heading into the halftime intermission.

Over two minutes in the second half, the Comets went on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 18 with 10:36 left in the second half. Viterbo would slowly start closing the gap over the next five minutes to cut the lead to nine. Viterbo would close the gap to seven but not get any closer, as the Comets would hit their free throws to close out the game and pick up an 87-78 victory.

The Comets finished the game with 52.6 percent from the field, 46.7 percent from behind the arc, 13-of-19 from the free-throw line, and 25 rebounds. They also finished with 20 points in the paint, 18 points off turnovers, 37 bench points, and five second-chance points.

Keiron Goodwin scored a team-high 19 points, three rebounds, and one assist. Latrelle Franklin tallied 15 points, four rebounds, and five assists. John Ketchel recorded eight points, six steals, three steals, and two rebounds. Carl Snyder tallied 12 points and one rebound off the bench. Thomas Gieske was the last Comet in double figures with 11 points, three rebounds, and one assist.

Mayville State returns to the court next Friday as they host Dakota State for an NSAA Match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm against the Trojans.
