V-Hawks use strong fourth quarter to defeat Comets

La Crosse, WI – The Mayville State University Women's Basketball team dropped a conference game at Viterbo Saturday afternoon by a final of 60-72. The Comets drop to 7-2 on the regular season and 2-1 in conference play.

MSU and VU were tied at four with 5:51 left in the first quarter before Viterbo went on a 5-0 run. Mayville State went on an 8-0 run to take a three-point lead, Elfering scored six points during that stretch. Erin Walcker hit a jumper with 17 seconds left to take the lead and a two-point lead heading into the second quarter.

Mayville State would hold a four-point lead for most of the second quarter and take a three-point lead heading into the halftime break. Viterbo was down six-points early in the second quarter before a 6-0 run tied the game at 40 with 7:47 left in the third quarter. Viterbo out-scored the Comets by four in the third quarter and took a two-point lead heading into the final quarter.

The Comets started the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run capped by three points by Zrust. The game was tied at 59 with 5:33 left in the fourth quarter before Viterbo went on a 12-0 run to open the game and defeat the Comets by 12. MSU finished the game shooting 43.9 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from behind the 3-point line, and 45 rebounds.

Jordan Zrust led the Comets with 17 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes. Taylor Reilly scored 12 points off the bench for the Comets, she also tallied four rebounds. Danneka Voegeli tallied eight points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one block. Erin Walcker scored seven points, five rebounds, two assists, and one block in the loss. Heather Elfering scored nine points on 3-for-3 shooting.

The Comets return to the floor next Friday as they host Dakota State at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
