Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University men's basketball team defeated the Waldorf Warriors by a final score of 79-45. The Comets move to 13-4 overall and 10-3 in the conference and clinch a share of the NSAA Regular Season Championship.
Mayville State started the game fast jumping out to a six-point lead and holding that lead for the first nine minutes of the game. After Waldorf cut the lead to two, MSU went on an 8-0 run to extend the lead to double digits. The Comets would get the lead to 12 a couple of times during the first half and took that 12-point lead into the intermission.
The Comets would extend the lead early in the second half and would not look back. MSU went on multiple runs in the second half a 17-2 run that lasted over seven minutes of the second half to extend the lead out to 35 with five minutes left in the game. The Comets would cruise to a 34-point victory and clinch a share of the NSAA Regular Season title.
MSU would shoot 43.8 percent from the field, 36.1 percent from behind the arc, tallied 52 rebounds, and dished out 17 assists on 32 made field goals. The Comets also finished with 30 bench points, 12 second-chance points, and four points off turnovers. Latrelle Franklin tallied 16 points, eight rebounds, and four assists for the Comets.
Keiron Goodwin tallied 13 points, five rebounds, and one assist in the victory. Iker Cruz recorded 10 rebounds, five points, and one steal in the victory. Najee Brown-Henderson led the bench with 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists. John Ketchel recorded nine points, six rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Paul MacSteves tallied seven points and Thomas Gieske recorded six points off the bench.
The Comets still have one regular-season game on Thursday at Presentation College before the conference tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 against the Saints.
