Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University women's basketball team defeated the Waldorf Warriors by a final score of 70-44 Saturday afternoon. The Comets move to 12-7 and 7-6 in conference play.
The Comets were up one-point at the 3:21 mark of the first quarter before Mayville State scored nine of the last 11 points in the quarter and took a seven-point lead heading into the second quarter. Mayville State continued to hold a three-possession lead throughout the second quarter. Waldorf would cut the lead to four one time with 3:17 left in the half but MSU got the lead back up to eight heading into the intermission.
Danneka Voegeli scored the first six points of the half for the Comets to extend the lead to 14 with 7:19 left in the third quarter. MSU would get the lead up to as many as 19 in the third quarter and would head into the final quarter with a 17-point advantage. The Comets only allowed eight points in the final quarter and would go on to win the game by a final score of 70-44.
Mayville State shot 36.9 percent from the field, 16.7 percent from behind the 3-point line, tallied 29 rebounds, and 12 assists on 24 field goals made. The Comets also had 28 points off turnovers, 16 second-chance points, and 13 bench points. Danneka Voegeli tallied 27 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and one block.
Jordan Zrust was also in double figures with 19 points, five rebounds, eight steals, and one assist. Kayla Rocholl tallied six points, one rebound, and one assist in the win. Erin Walcker scored five points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Taylor Reilly recorded four points off the bench for the Comets. Heather Elfering, Sydney Brekken, and Brianna Hutter scored three points off the bench.
The Comets are on the road for the final game of the regular season on Thursday as they travel to Presentation College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm from Aberdeen, South Dakota.
