Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Men's Basketball team takes sole possession of first place after victory over Bruins and Valley City's loss to Viterbo. The Comets move to 10-4 overall and 7-3 in NSAA play.
The Comets were trailing 2-4 early in the game before a 9-2 run to give MSU a seven-point advantage. Bellevue would answer with seven points of their own and tie the game at 11. Mayville State would go on another run of 11-2 midway through the first half to take a nine-point line. The Comets would get the lead to 20 at the 2:43 mark of the first half and would take a 16-point lead heading into the intermission.
The Comets would continue to hold a 16-point lead throughout the first five minutes of the second half before the Bruins got the lead to nine. The Bruins would continue to close the gap to four with 9:33 left in the game. The lead would not get past seven until the 4:15 mark of the second half. BU would continue to fight and got the lead to four with 2:29 left in the game before the Comets finished the game on an 11-3 run to pick up the 12-point victory.
The Comets finished the game shooting 56.1 percent from the field, 30.0 percent from the 3-point line, and 14 assists on 32 made field goals. They also finished with 50 points in the paint, 20 bench points, 16 fast-break points, 11 points off turnovers, and seven second-chance points. Latrelle Franklin was one of two Comets to score 17 points in the game. He also finished with eight rebounds, four assists, and one steal.
John Ketchel also scored 17 points, three rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Xavier Towne was the final Comet in double figures with 15 points and five rebounds. Iker Cruz scored eight points, pulled in five rebounds, and dished out one assist. Carl Snyder tallied nine points off the bench, with three rebounds, and two blocks. Keiron Goodwin scored six points and tallied six rebounds in the start.
The Comets are back in action tomorrow night as they match up with the Trojans of Dakota State. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm from Madison, South Dakota.
