Trojans strong third quarter propels them past Comets

Madison, S.D. – The Mayville State University Women's Basketball team dropped a conference game to Trojans by a final score of 56-75. The Comets drop to 11-6 overall and 6-5 in conference play.

When the Comets were up four points early in the first quarter, the Trojans tied the game at seven. In the last 3:36 of the first quarter, Dakota State finished the quarter on an 8-1 run to take a five-point lead heading into the first quarter. Mayville State scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take a two-point lead. The Comets were up 24-20 with 2:41 left in the half and allowed a 4-9 run into halftime and trailed by one heading into the intermission.

DSU started the third quarter on a 12-4 run that lasted over four minutes to jump out to a nine-point lead. The Trojans continued to extend the lead throughout the third quarter, as the lead grew to 15. The Comets trailed by 15 heading into the fourth quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Mayville State cut the lead to nine points, but the Trojans would not allow the Comets to get any closer and pick up a 19-point victory.

Mayville State shot 33.3 percent from the field, 76.7 percent from the free-throw line, tallied 35 rebounds, and 11 assists on 16 made field goals. The Comets also finished with 28 points in the paint, 11 points off turnovers, four second-chance points, four bench points, and two fast-break points. Jordan Zrust finished the game with a game-high 26 points, six rebounds, and two assists.

Danneka Voegeli finished with a double-double with 12 points, 15 rebounds, one assist, two blocks, and two steals. Erin Walcker tallied eight points, three rebounds, one assist, and one block. CJ Decker and Kayla Rocholl finished with three points in the game. Taylor Dean and Taylor Reilly each scored two points off the bench.

The Comets are back home on Friday and Saturday as they host Viterbo University and Waldorf University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm on Friday and 3:00 pm on Saturday at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
