Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Baseball team split with Morningside College on Sunday by a final score of 5-2 and 5-10. The Comets move to 8-5 on the regular season.
Game One:
The Comets started the scoring in game one, tallying two runs in the bottom of the first inning on two hits. Theisen hit a home run to centerfield to give the Comets the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Senden hit a single to left-center field that scored Forst and gives the Comets a 2-0 advantage. MSU added another run in the bottom of the third inning on another single from Senden that scored DeLuca.
Mayville State added one run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Senden sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored McCorrister to extend the lead to four. Later in the inning, MSU had the bases loaded with two outs and struck out swinging to end the threat. The final run for the Comets was on a solo home run to centerfield from McCorrister to give the Comets a 5-0 lead. Morningside would push two runs in the seventh inning, but it was not enough as the Comets win game one by a final of 5-2
Parker Stohr was dominant this afternoon for the Comets allowing two hits, one walk, struck out 10 Mustangs over 6.0 innings. Preston Edinger only faced three hitters in relief for the Comets and Kenneth Stewart closed the first game recording the final three outs. Adam Senden and Payton DeLuca each finished the game with two hits. Senden also finished with three runs batted in. Michael Theisen, Jared McCorrister, and Sammy Satrom each tallied one hit in the victory.
Game Two:
The Mustangs started game two scoring three runs in the top of the second inning on three hits and one MSU error. Mayville State answered with one run in the bottom of the frame on the double from Senden that scored Forst. Morningside College extends the lead back to three in the top of the third inning on one hit and one MSU error. Senden drove in his second run of the game in the bottom of the third inning on a single that scored McCorrister.
Morningside College would answer the Comets for the second straight inning with one run in the top of the fourth inning. The Mustangs scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning on three hits and three Comet errors to extend the MC lead to 10-2. The Comets would fight back and score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on three hits. Jamieson doubled down the right-field line to score Garpestad. The next batter was Theisen doubled to left field that scored Satrom and pinch-runner Marcus Hughes.
The Comets went down in order in the seventh inning to drop game two by a final of 10-5. Jared McCorrister and Adam Senden each tallied two hits in game two. McCorrister tallied one run, and Senden recorded two runs batted in. Caleb Jamieson, Michael Theisen, and Sammy Satrom each tallied one hit in the loss.
