Comet Baseball splits with Bruins on first day of conference play

Bellevue, Neb. – The Mayville State University Baseball team split with Bellevue University on the first day of conference by a final score of 4-5 and 3-2. The Comets move to 12-7 on the regular season and 1-1 in conference play.
 
Game One:
The Comets started the first game scoring three runs in the top of the first inning on three hits, one Bruin error but they left the bases loaded. McCorrister reached on a fielder's choice after the first two runners reached base and drove in Ferrera who was running for Wohl. The bases were loaded with two outs in the inning when Garpestad reached on a Bellevue error that scored the second run of the inning.
 
The next batter Satrom reached on an infield single to score the third run of the inning. Villanueva flew out to right field to end the first inning. Bellevue got one run back in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run to cut the lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bruins scored their second run of the game to close the gap to one heading into the final five innings.
 
The Bruins scored another run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an infield single that scored the third run of the game for BU to tie the game at three. BU would score another run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the one-run lead heading into the final inning. With one out in the ninth, May drew a walk to put the tying run on base. Villanueva would reenter the game for May and steal second base to put the tying run in scoring position.
 
After a strikeout from Wohl, Hughes delivered a single to left-center field to tie the game at four and force extra innings. New conference rules were put into play as both teams started the extra frame with a runner on second base. The Comets could not score the runner in the top of the frame. With one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, Bellevue scores one run and walks-off the Comets in the first game.
 
Marcus Wohl and Marcus Hughes each tallied two hits in the game for the Comets. Hughes tallied one run scored and one run batted in. Sammy Satrom and Jared McCorrister recorded the other two hits for the Comets in the loss. Connor DiNaro allowed 10 hits, three earned runs, one walk, and five strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work but took the no-decision in the game. Alexander DeCaro recorded the loss going 3.1 innings allowing four hits, one earned run and struck out two batters.
 
Game Two:
Mayville State started the scoring in the second game as well, pushing one run across in the top of the third inning on a Marcus Wohl home run. Bellevue University would score two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on two hits and two Comet errors. Mayville State would take the lead back in the top of the fifth scoring two runs on two hits.
 
Hughes hit a sacrifice fly to left field with one out to score Satrom. The next batter McCorrister singled to left field to score Villanueva and give the Comets a 3-2 advantage. Bellevue had runners at first and second in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Stewart got the last batter to fly out to right field and pick up a split on day one.
 
Jared McCorrister and Anthony Villanueva tallied two hits in the victory. Villanueva scored a run while McCorrister drove in one run. Marcus Wohl tallied one hit, one run scored, and one run batted in. Parker Stohr picked up the win on the mound going 5.0 innings allowing five hits, two earned runs, zero walks, and four strikeouts. Kenneth Stewart picked up the save going 2.0 innings allowing one hit, one walk, and two strikeouts.
