Bellevue, Neb. – The Comet baseball team split with Bellevue University on Saturday by a final score of 0-5 and 8-3. The Comets move to 13-8 on the regular season.
Game One:
It was a scoreless game through the first 4.5 innings as neither team could create any opportunities. Bellevue broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring five runs on five hits and left one runner on base. The Bellevue pitching staff only allowed four hits over nine innings in the 5-0 shutout.
Theo May, Marcus Wohl, Anthony Villanueva, and Jared McCorrister tallied one hit for the Comets. The Comets also forced five walks but could not take advantage of the free base runners. Josh Rodriguez started on the mound for the Comets allowing one hit, three walks, and two strikeouts. Calvin Watkins took the loss for MSU allowing five hits, five earned runs, one walk, and one strikeout out of the bullpen. Ryan Froemke pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball just walking two batters.
Game Two:
The Comets started the scoring in the second game scoring three runs in the second inning. Wohl drew a bases loaded walk to score May and take the 1-0 lead. The next batter Hughes singled in Satrom and Senden to give the Comets a 3-0 lead. Mayville State would add another run in the third inning on a Garpestad single to center to score Senden.
Mayville State continued to extend the lead in the top of the fourth inning on a double from McCorrister that scored Hughes, a single from Villanueva that scored McCorrister, and a single from May that scored Villanueva. Bellevue scored three runs combined in the fifth and sixth inning but the Comets offense came alive for the final game of the series.
Marcus Hughes led the way with three hits, three runs batted in, and one run scored. Theo May recorded two hits, one run scored, and one run batted in. Jared McCorrister also tallied two hits, one runs batted in, and one run scored. Anthony Villanueva, Adam Senden, Gunner Garpestad, and Sammy Satrom each tallied one hit in the victory.
Matthew Johnston picked up the win going 4.1 innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, three walks, and two strikeouts. Connor Cory pitched one inning in relief allowing three hits, two earned runs, one walk, and one strikeout. Kenneth Stewart pitched 1.2 innings walking two batters and striking out one.
