Watford City, N.D. – What was originally scheduled as a home date for the Mayville State Comets turned into an offensive showcase on the road Tuesday afternoon, as Mayville State and the Bismarck State Mystics combined for an incredible 105 runs across a triple header.
The Comets accounted for 64 of those runs, blasting 14 home runs on the day and sweeping all three games to reach the 20-win mark on the season.
Game 1: Mayville State 24, Bismarck State 16
- Bismarck State came out swinging, plating five runs in the top of the first inning behind a pair of home runs to grab an early lead.
- Mayville State answered in the bottom of the second when Tony Villarreal and Cam Goff each launched home runs, combining for six runs. Two additional bases-loaded walks helped the Comets surge ahead 8-5.
- The Mystics responded with two more home runs in the third to tie the game at 8-8, but Jack McQueen delivered an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom half to put the Comets back in front 9-8.
- The offense kept rolling in the fourth as Mayville State added two more home runs, including Goff's second of the game, scoring six runs to extend the lead to 15-8. The Comets added nine more runs over the fifth and sixth innings to build separation.
- Bismarck State threatened in the seventh with five late runs, but Mayville State's offensive cushion secured the 24-16 victory. The two teams combined for 11 home runs in the opener.
Game 2: Mayville State 22, Bismarck State 9
- The power display continued in game two as Bismarck State opened with a two-run homer in the first inning for a quick 2-0 lead.
- Mayville State answered immediately with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the inning to move ahead 3-2, then broke the game open in the third.
- Cam Goff and Kevin Conway each homered during a seven-run third inning, with the Comets stringing together multiple hits to take control. Mayville State scored in every inning of the game and never looked back.
- The Mystics mounted a late push with six runs in the seventh, but the Comets closed out a 22-9 win. Eight home runs were hit in game two, with five coming from Mayville State.
Game 3: Mayville State 18, Bismarck State 16
- The finale delivered the most dramatic finish of the day.
- Locked in a back-and-forth battle, the Comets entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 16-8 and facing their largest deficit of the afternoon.
- Tony Villarreal started the rally with a one-out single, followed by a double from Jett Hutchinson. Cam Goff continued his hot day with a two-RBI double, and Kevin Conway followed with a single before Jalen Denton crushed a two-run home run to pull Mayville State within three at 16-13.
- Zachary Evanochko singled, Jack McQueen doubled, and Bode Roberts drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch brought home another run, making it 16-14 with one out.
- Robert Gurney was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases, bringing Villarreal back to the plate.
- On a 3-1 count, Villarreal delivered the decisive swing of the day, launching a walk-off grand slam over the left field fence to complete the comeback and secure the sweep.
- Mayville State scored 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning alone to cap the dramatic 18-16 victory.
