Dickinson, N.D. – Mayville State Comets Baseball kicked off their 2026 Frontier Conference series play with a four game road series at Dickinson State.
"It was two different days for us. I have no idea what team I was coaching on Saturday, but as I shared with the guys after the game, that wasn't us," said head coach
Billy Tomblin. "It sure was not the same group from the previous 24 games and we collectively had 16 hours to find us and play our brand of baseball."
Game 1 – L 6-9
- Bode Roberts delivered the biggest swing of the day with a 6th-inning grand slam to right field, turning a 5–2 deficit into a 6–5 Mayville State lead.
- Kevin Conway stayed productive at the plate, going 2-for-3 and adding a sacrifice fly RBI in the 5th inning as the Comets first tied the game at 2–2.
- Garret Lundmark gave Mayville State strong strikeout numbers early, recording 8 strikeouts in 4.1 innings before Dickinson State broke things open in the 5th and 6th innings.
- The turning point came right after Roberts' grand slam: Dickinson State answered immediately with four runs in the bottom of the 6th, reclaiming control and sealing the win.
Game 2 – L 6-13
- Mayville State answered early with a big 5-run third inning after falling behind 6–0, the Comets cut the deficit to one by stringing together five runs in the third. RBI hits came from Tony Villarreal, Kevin Conway, and Zachary Evanochko, with Evanochko delivering a 2-RBI double to cap the rally.
- Zachary Evanochko led the offense; finishing 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, collecting both a two-run double in the third and an RBI single in the eighth inning.
- Dickinson State broke it open in the 6th inning scoring five runs in the sixth, highlighted by a 2-run homer, turning a 6–5 game into an 11–5 advantage.
- Kevin Conway added another multi-hit performance; he went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Game 3 – W 19-3
- The Comets exploded for 19 runs on 19 hits, with the biggest damage coming in the middle innings. Mayville State scored 6 runs in the 4th, then added 4 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th, and 3 more in the 7th to turn a tied game into a blowout.
- Jack McQueen had a 3-run home run in the 4th inning, part of the six-run frame that broke the game open and pushed the lead to 9–3.
- Marshall Judisch had a huge offensive game, hitting for the cycle.
- Cam Goff hit 3 home runs in his 4 at bats.
- The Comets had 7 home runs in the game.
- On the mound, Tyler Boden earned the win, while Mayville State held Dickinson State to just 6 hits and 3 runs all game.
Game 4 – W 12-8
- Jack McQueen led the offense, finishing 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and 4 runs scored, including a 2-run home run in the 8th inning that gave the Comets key insurance late.
- Robert Gurney added power in the middle innings with a solo home run in the 4th, then later drew an RBI walk in the 5th to finish with 2 RBI and 2 hits.
- Keegan Neva went 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored and 2 walks, helping spark multiple rallies from the bottom half of the lineup.
- Even after Dickinson State cut the game to 6–5 in the 4th, the Comets answered with runs in the 5th, 7th, and 8th innings to close out the series with a win.
"We showed up today and I emphasize we because that's what is was all day, we us, together as a team finding a way. Pitching was not where it has been, off weekend for us on the mound which we will address and make some adjustments going into next weekend but the bats picked them up and we found a way to win two games," said Tomblin.
