Comet Softball sweeps Hastings College on Sunday afternoon

Hastings, Neb. – The Comet Softball team picked up a sweep against Hastings College on Sunday by a final score of 12-8 and 3-0. The Comets move to 4-12 on the regular season.

Game One:

The Comets started the game by scoring five runs, on four hits, and one Hastings error. The first run of the inning was scored on a single from Foster that scored Gutierrez. On the single, the catcher recorded an error that scored Duval and Kemball to give MSU a 3-0 lead. Ontiveros would hit a two-run home run that scored Foster to give the Comets a 5-0 lead.

MSU would add three more runs in the top of the fourth inning on two hits, and two Broncos errors. Larkin laid down a squeeze bunt for a single that scored Iverson. Later in the inning, Duval hit a single to center to score Gutierrez for the second time in the game. Kemball hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Larking and the third run of the inning and give the Comets an 8-0 lead.

Hastings scored one run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to seven. In the top of the sixth inning, MSU opened the game scoring four runs on three hits. Kemball doubled to centerfield to scored Larkin and Duval to jump out to a 10-1 lead. Roeges hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield later in the inning to score Kemball. Tingey singled to right field to score Boechler to score the 12th run of the game. Hastings would answer with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to five. The Broncos would score one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Comets win game one 12-8.

Ashlyn Tingey led the Comets offense with four hits and one run batted in. Shaye Kemball recorded three hits, two runs scored, and three runs batted in. Bailey Larkin and Mackenzie Duval finished with two hits, two runs scored, and one run batted in. Alissa Foster and Jocelyn Ontiveros tallied one hit and one run scored. Courtney Boll picked up the win in the circle going 5.2 innings, eight hits, seven earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.

Game Two:

It was scoreless through the first four innings before the Comets scored three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning. Jocelyn Ontiveros doubled to right field to score Gutierrez and Larkin to go up 2-0. Later in the inning, Tingey drew a bases-loaded walk to score Foster. The Comets would leave the bases loaded in the fifth inning as they were threatening to put more than three runs up in the fifth. The Comets would post a shutout in game two and tally a second game victory of 3-0.

Sidney Fairbanks was dominant in the circle in game two throwing a complete game allowing three hits and only walking one batter. Dayne Gutierrez tallied two hits and one run in the game two victory. Bailey Larking, Mackenzie Duval, Alissa Foster, Jocelyn Ontiveros, and Ashlyn Tingey each tallied a hit in the second game.
