Aberdeen, S.D. – The Mayville State Softball team swept the Presentation College Saints by a final score of 10-1 and 8-4 on Friday. The Comets move to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Game One:
The Mayville State Softball team scored five runs in the top of the first inning on five hits and one Saint error. The Comets started the scoring on a bunt single followed by an error to score Gutierrez. Foster singled to left-center that scored Larkin and Duval to extend the lead to 3-0. Ontiveros doubled to left-center that scored Foster for the fourth run of the inning.
The fifth run in the top of the first inning was scored by Ontiveros after the single from Tingey. Mayville State scored one run in the top of the second inning on a double from Foster that scored Larkin for the second time. Presentation College scored one run in the bottom of the third inning on two hits. In the top of the fourth inning, MSU would break the game open scoring four runs on four hits. Gutierrez scored on a single from Foster, Ontiveros hit a 3-run home run to scored Kemball, and Foster to jump out to a 10-1 lead. The Comets would win in five innings due to mercy rule.
Alissa Foster led the Comets going 3-for-3 in game one scoring two runs and driving in four runs. Jocelyn Ontiveros tallied two hits, two runs scored, and four runs batted in. Five Comets tallied one hit in the victory as they finished with 11 hits in game one. Shaye Kemball picked up the complete game going 5.0 innings, three hits, one earned run, and three strikeouts.
Game Two:
The Comets scored first again in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the third inning on one hit and one Saint error. Ontiveros reached on a fielder's choice and Gutierrez scored the first run and Larkin scored on an error from the Saints to make it 2-0. The Comets scored three more runs in the top of the fourth inning on three hits and one PC error. Gutierrez reached on an error and Tingey scored on the error.
Later in the inning, Duval doubled to right-center and that scored Spurgeon and Gutierrez to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Saints scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to five. In the top of the seventh inning, the Comets scored three runs on four hits. Roeges singled to left field that scored Boechler. Tingey hit a two-run home run later in the inning to give the Comets an 8-0 lead.
Presentation College scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Comets would complete the doubleheader sweep, winning game two by a final of 8-4. Dayna Gutierrez tallied two hits in the victory with two runs scored and one run batted in. Ashlyn Tingey recorded two hits, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Sidney Fairbanks pitched 6.2 innings allowing seven hits, four earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts.
