Comets sweep Trojans in NSAA doubleheader Sunday at Scott Berry Field

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State Baseball team scored 18 runs in the doubleheader sweep against the Trojans on Sunday afternoon at Scott Berry Field. The Comets move to 20-10 on the regular season and 10-4 in conference play.

Game One: Mayville State 10, Dakota State 2

The Comets scored one run in the bottom of the first inning on two hits. Theisen singled up the middle to score Rocholl to give MSU a 1-0 lead. The Comets scored three more runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. Villanueva ripped a double to left field to score Forst and Senden. Later in the inning, Satrom scored on a sacrifice fly from Hughes to score the third run of the inning.

Dakota State scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning on two hits to cut the lead in half. Mayville State answered with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Satrom scored on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-2. The Comets scored another run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a double from Villanueva that scored Satrom for the third time this game.

Mayville State opened the game in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring four runs on four hits. An infield single from May scored McCorrister, then Senden singled to right field to score Garpestad, followed by a double from Satrom that scored Forst and Senden to win game one by a final score of 10-2.

Adam Senden finished with two hits, two runs scored, and one run batted in. Anthony Villanueva tallied two hits and three runs batted in in the victory. Seven other Comets finished the game with one hit in the victory. Calvin Watkins started on the mound for the Comets going 3.1 innings allowing two hits, two earned runs, five walks, and two strikeouts. Ramsay Taliaferro picked up the win going 5.2 innings allowing three hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Game Two: Mayville State 8, Dakota State 7

Dakota State scored four runs in the top of the first inning on two hits to take a 4-0 lead on the Comets. Mayville State scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning on two hits to tie the game at four. McCorrister hit a three-run home run to right-field to score Rocholl and May. Later in the inning, Garpestad scored on a throwing error from the catcher.

Dakota State took the lead right back in the top of the second inning on a three-run home run to take a 7-4 lead over the Comets. Wohl drove in Satrom on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning with one out to cut the lead to two. Senden hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at seven. Mayville State scored one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 8-7 lead and Kenneth Stewart would do the rest going 5.2 innings allowing two hits, two walks, and eight strikeouts. The Comets finished with six hits, six walks, and seven runs batted in, Jared McCorrister tallied one hit, one run scored, and three runs batted in. Adam Senden recorded one hit, one run scored, and two runs batted in.

The Comets are back in action on Wednesday at Concordia Moorhead to play NCAA Division III opponent. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm from Moorhead, Minnesota.
