Forest City, Iowa - The Mayville State University Baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Waldorf Warriors on Friday afternoon by a final score of 5-6 and 7-6. The Comets move to 22-11 on the regular season and 11-5 in conference play.
Game One:
The Warriors started the scoring in game one with one run one hit to take an early one-run lead. Mayville State answered with four runs in three hits, Satrom scored on a single from left field and McCorrister hit a three-run home run that scored Rocholl and Hughes. Waldorf Warriors tied the game at four with three runs on four hits.
Mayville State took the lead in the top of the seventh inning on a double from Theisen that scored Hughes to take a 5-4 lead heading into the final nine outs. Waldorf Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on one hit and left the leading run at third base with two outs. Waldorf hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk off the Comets in the first game of the doubleheader.
Marcus Hughes tallied two hits, two runs scored and drew one walk. Sammy Satrom tallied two hits on three at-bats, and one run scored. Jared McCorrister tallied one hit, one run scored, and three runs batted in. Marcus Wohl, Michael Theisen tallied one hit and one run batted in game one.
Parker Stohr started on the mound for the Comets tallied 5.0 innings pitched, six hits, four earned runs, two walks, and five strikeouts. Trevor Schreiner pitched 1.1 innings in relief allowing one hit, one earned run, one walk, and one strikeout. Kenneth Stewart recorded the loss, tossing 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, one earned run, and two strikeouts.
Game Two:
The Mayville State Comets started game two scoring four runs on two hits and one Waldorf error. Bases loaded walk from Theisen scored Ferrera to jump out to a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Senden doubled down the left-field line to score McCorrister and Hughes to go up three. With two outs in the first, Satrom had an infield single that scored Theisen for the fourth run of the inning.
Waldorf Warriors answered with one run in the bottom of the first inning on two hits. Waldorf scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on two hits and three hits to cut the Comet lead to one. The Warriors would tie the game at four in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run. Game two went into extra innings and the Comets scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Theisen singled to left field to score Ferrera and two batters later Garpestad singled to left field that scored McCorrister and Theisen. Waldorf scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the lead to one and had the game-tying run on second base before a lineout to Satrom for a four-unassisted double play to end game two and force a split.
Connor DiNaro started the game on the mound for the Comets allowing seven hits, three earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts over 2.2 innings. Alex DeCaro picked up the win going 4.2 innings allowing five hits, two earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. Kenneth Stewart picked up the save going 0.2 innings allowing one hit.
