Comets split Saturday doubleheader with Waldorf

FOREST CITY, IOWA – Mayville State's baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader, winning game one 13-6, and falling by one run in game two, 3-2. The split puts Mayville State at 23-12 overall and 11-6 in the conference, solidly in second place behind Bellevue.

Game One: Mayville State 13, Waldorf 6

Four combined home runs in the contest, with two by each team, sparked a Mayville State 13-6 win over Waldorf in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Mayville State kicked off the scoring in the top of the first, as Adam Senden singled to left field, scoring Jared McCorrister and Tyler Fererra, giving Mayville State the early 2-0 lead. It stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when Waldorf fought back, picking up three runs and taking the lead 3-2 heading into the fifth inning.

Mayville State struck – and struck big time – in the top of the fifth inning as Michael Theisen sent a ball down the right-field line, scoring Fererra, tying the game at 3-3. A short time later, Senden picked up his second base hit, a double, and scored Theisen, pulling the Comets ahead by one run. Gunnar Garpestad's sac fly to center field put Mayville State ahead 5-3 as Senden was sent home on the play.

Mayville State doubled up Waldorf in the sixth on a solo home run by Marcus Wohl, only to have Waldorf respond in the bottom of the seventh.

With two runners on in the seventh, Jack Muhleck tied the game with one swing of the bat, a three-run home run to left field, tying the game at 6-6.

Mayville State, however, struck in the top of the eighth.

Theisen took matters into his own hands – and hit a grand slam – to give the Comets the 10-6 lead, one they would never relinquish.

Marcus Hughes would add insurance in the top of the ninth with an RBI triple, scoring Anthony Villanueva; along with a single by McCorrister, who hit an RBI single to score Hughes.

Josh Rodriguez was the winning pitcher for Mayville State, surrendering two runs on three hits in the contest.

Theisen, Senden, and Wohl all had three hits for the Comets, while McCorrister, Skylar Forst, and Sammy Satrom each compiled two hits apiece.

Game two: Waldorf 3, Mayville State 2

Game two of the doubleheader Saturday was a much tighter contest, with the Warriors topping the Comets 3-2. All five combined runs came in the late innings, with Waldorf scoring all three of theirs in the bottom of the sixth inning, while Mayville State scored one in the top of the sixth and the other in the top of the seventh inning.

Mayville State opened the scoring with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. After flyouts by Marcus Hughes and Jared McCorrister, Michael Theisen got ahold of a pitch and hit a solo home run to left field, giving the Comets the early 1-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Waldorf countered in the bottom of the seventh inning for three runs off reliever Trevor Schreiner, who came in for pitcher Matt Johnston to start the inning.

Mayville State was able to cut the lead to one run in the top of the seventh inning on a double-play grounder by Anthony Villaneuva, scoring Gunnar Garpestad, but it was too little, too late as Marcus Wohl fouled out to the first base side to end the game on the next at-bat.

Four Comets picked up a hit each – Theisen, Garpestad, Villaneuva, and Theo May.

Schreiner, who only pitched a third of an inning, was issued the loss, giving up three runs on one hit.

The Comets will return to conference action on Wednesday when they host the Valley City State Vikings at Scott Berry Field in Mayville. The action is scheduled to get underway with the first pitch in the doubleheader set for 2 p.m.
