Comets sweep Vikings in NSAA Baseball doubleheader

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State Baseball team swept a doubleheader against the Valley City State Vikings on Wednesday by a final score of 7-6 and 6-3. The Comets move to 25-12 overall and 14-6 in conference play.

Game One: Valley City 6, Mayville State 7

Both teams scored runs in the first inning, as the Vikings scored one run in the top of the first inning on one hit and two Comet errors. Mayville State answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first inning on zero hits and one Viking error. The first four batters of the inning were walked to score the tying run. Senden then reached on an error by the second baseman to scored Hughes for the second run of the inning.

After a fly-out, Forst hit a sacrifice fly to left field to McCorrister for the third run of the inning without recording a hit. Valley City State answered with one run in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the lead to one. The Vikings would score three more runs in the top of the third inning on two hits and two errors to take a 5-2 lead over the Comets. MSU would take a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the third inning on three hits. With one out in the inning, Forst ripped a solo home run to left field to cut the Viking lead to one.

The next batter Villanueva doubled to left field to score Satrom and tie the game at five. A few batters later, McCorrister stepped up to the plate with two outs and doubled to right field to score Villanueva with Ferrera thrown out at home to end the inning. VCSU tied the game in the top of the fourth inning at six. Both teams went scoreless for the next couple of innings before the Comets broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth inning on two hits and one VCSU error.

Hughes started the inning with an infield single, followed by a fly out to right field. With one out in the inning, Hughes stole second base. With two outs in the inning, Hughes stole his second base of the inning forcing a throw into the outfield and scoring on the wild throw from the catcher to score the final run of the game. Kenneth Stewart closed the door in the seventh inning allowing one walk but not allowing the runner to advance past first base.

The Comets finished with six different people tallying a hit in the victory. Skylar Forst finished with two runs batted in and one run scored. Anthony Villanueva, Adam Senden, Michael Theisen, and Jared McCorrister finished with one run batted in. Connor DiNaro started the game for the Comets going 2.0 innings allowing four hits and one earned run. Alex DeCaro pitched two innings allowing four hits, three earned runs, and two walks. Calvin Watkins and Trevor Schreiner combined for four innings allowing four hits, and zero runs. Schreiner picked up the victory in game one for the Comets.

Game Two: Valley City 3, Mayville State 6

The Comets started the scoring in game two in the third inning scoring four runs on three hits and one VCSU error. After Forst walked and stole second base, Satrom reached on an error by the third baseman that allowed Frost to score the first run. Satrom scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball from the catcher to give the Comets a 2-0 advantage. With zero outs in the inning, McCorrister came up to the plate with the bases loaded and singles to center to scored Villanueva. The final run of the inning was scored on a bases-loaded walk that scored Josh Soine.

May doubled in the bottom of the fifth inning to score Theisen and give the Comets a 5-0 lead. Later in the inning, Forst doubled down the left-field line to give MSU a commanding six-run lead. In the top of the sixth inning, VCSU cut the lead in half off a three-run home run to dead center. For the second time today, Kenneth Stewart closed out the game, going 1.2 innings and striking out three out-of-the four batters he faced.

In game two, the Comets had five different players tally a hit and drew seven walks. Hughes, McCorrister, May, Forst, and Villanueva each recorded one hit in the second game. Adam Senden picked up the win for the Comets in game two going 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs, two walks, and six strikeouts. Preston Edinger walked the only batter he faced in the game.

Up Next: 

The Comets are scheduled to host Viterbo University on Saturday and Sunday at Scott Berry Field. The first pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1:00 pm and 12:00 pm on Sunday against the V-Hawks.
