Mayville State sweeps Waldorf, extending winning streak to eight game

Forest City, IOWA – The Mayville State softball team has kept their winning streak intact, winning both games Saturday afternoon against Waldorf in North Star Athletic Association action. The Comets, with the two wins Saturday, are now on an eight-game winning streak.

Game one: Mayville State 14, Waldorf 0

The Comets started strong in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, plating 13 runs in the first two innings, en route to a 14-0 win over the Warriors.

The Comets broke the game wide open in the first inning. After a ground out by Dayna Gutierrez to the pitcher, Mackenzie Duval singled to center field to begin the Comet run in the inning. Shaye Kemball, Mayville State's starting pitcher, then followed up with a center field single of her own, pushing Duval to second with just one out, bringing up Alissa Foster, who had a successful day at the plate Friday.

With Duval at second and Kemball at first, Foster got ahold of a perfect pitch, sending over the left-center field wall, pushing the Comets ahead 3-0 early in the game.

Brooke Roeges doubled, Ashlyn Tingey singled, and the Roeges scored on an errant throw, and it was then 4-0 Comets. Singles by Jocelyn Ontiveros and Megan Milligan pushed Tingey around the base paths and put the Comets up 5-0, which was the score heading into the bottom of the second.

Back-to-back-to-back singles by Kemball, Foster, and Roeges to start the top of the second inning pushed Kemball across the plate, starting an eight-run rally in the inning, the eventual dagger for the Warriors. Six straight at-bats led to runs for Mayville State, led by a Gutierrez double, which scored Milligan and Ontiveros and pushed Bailey Larkin to third.

Courtney Boll added an insurance run in the top of the fifth with a solo shot to center field.

Five Comets had multi-hit games, including Kemball, who went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, driving in a run and scoring one run. Foster went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI's, while Roeges, Tingey, and Milligan all had two hits as well. Milligan and Gutierrez each drove in two runs.

Kemball pitched a complete-game five-hitter, striking out three batters and walking three batters.

Game two: Mayville State 11, Waldorf 3

The Comets continued their offensive strength with a four-run first and sixth inning, walking away with an 11-3 win over the Warriors in Saturday's second game of the doubleheader.

Back-to-back doubles in the first inning, one by Jocelyn Ontiveros and the other by Megan Milligan scored three runs to give Mayville State the 4-0 lead after a one-half inning. The inning's run was scored by Mackenzie Duval on a single by Alissa Foster to center field.

The Warriors scored their only three runs in the bottom of the first inning via a pair of singles and a fielder's choice off Sidney Fairbanks, the Mayville State starter in the second game.

Milligan singled to center field in the third to make it 5-3.

The Comets put the dagger in the Warriors in the top of the sixth inning.

After singles by Foster and Dayna Gutierrez, along with Duval reaching on an error, Brooke Roeges reached on an RBI fielder's choice, scoring Gutierrez. On the next at-bat, Ontiveros found the right pitch, sending it to left field for a three-run home run.

Foster continued with the hot bat Saturday afternoon, going 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI's. Gutierrez and Ontiveros went 3-for-4, with Ontiveros driving in five runs.

Five Comets had multi-hit games in the game, with Milligan and Kalley Partyka each amassing two hits.

Sidney Fairbanks pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on eight hits. She struck out three batters and walked two in the six innings worked.
