VALLEY CITY, ND – The Mayville State University softball team's eight-game winning streak ended Wednesday afternoon with a pair of losses to Valley City State University on the road in Valley City. The Comets lost by scores of 10-1 and 5-1, respectively.
Game One: Valley City State 10, Mayville State 1
Mayville State's lone run came in the top of the second inning. A leadoff walk by Ashlyn Tingey, followed by Jocelyn Ontiveros, and a single to right field preceded a pair of strikeouts. With two outs, Dayna Gutierrez nailed a pitch to right field for a double, scoring Tingey and tying the game at 1-1.
The Comets surrendered eight runs in the bottom of the second, along with one more in the bottom of the fourth, giving the Vikings a 10-1 win.
Shaye Kemball pitched four innings, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits while striking out five batters and walking two.
Mayville State's four hits in the contest came from Gutierrez, Kemball, Ontiveros, and Madison Milligan.
Game Two: Valley City State 5, Mayville State 1
Looking to avenge a first game loss, the Comets went to work in game two to try and solve the offensive powerhouse in Valley City State.
The Vikings got out to a quick 2-0 lead after two innings and tacked on three more before the Comets were able to get a run on the board.
The Comets were held scoreless – and hitless – until the top of the sixth inning, when Shaye Kemball took a 3-2 pitch and launched it over the left-field fence, for the Comets' lone run and a hit of the contest.
Kemball finished one-for-three with the solo shot.
Courtney Boll pitched six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking four batters.

The Comets are back home again Saturday and Sunday for a four-game series against the Viterbo V-Hawks.
Saturday's doubleheader will get underway at 2 p.m. at the Paul Karlstad Softball Complex in Portland, N.D. Sunday's doubleheader will get underway at 12 p.m., also in Portland.
