Portland, N.D. – The Mayville State Softball team scored 20 runs in a doubleheader sweep against Viterbo V-Hawks 8-0 and 12-4. The Comets move to 17-15 on the regular season and 13-7 in conference play.
Game One: Viterbo 0, Mayville State 8
The Comets started the scoring in game one with a run scored on one V-Hawk error. A rbi ground out from Kemball scored Duval, who reached on the Viterbo error earlier in the inning. After a 1, 2, 3 top of the second for the Comet defense, MSU scored another run on three hits to extend the lead to two after two innings. A double from Ontiveros started the inning followed by a sacrifice bunt from Roeges to put a runner on third base with one out. The next batter Tingey slapped a single to left field to score Ontiveros.
Mayville State added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on two hits and three Viterbo errors. The scoring started on a single from Larkin that scored Tingey, followed by an error by the shortstop for the V-Hawks that scored Partyka. The third run of the inning was scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Duval to score Larkin to take a 5-0 lead on the V-Hawks.
After the first two runners reached in the bottom of the fifth inning, a groundout from Roeges put runners on second and third with one out from Tingey who hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Foster. The next batter Partyka doubled to center to score Ontiveros and extend the lead to 7-0. Kemball scored the eighth and final run of the game off a single from Foster to give the Comets a run-rule victory in game one by a final score of 8-0.
Shaye Kemball threw a complete game going 6.0 innings allowing three hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. At the plate, Jocelyn Ontiveros tallied two hits and two runs scored for the Comets. Alissa Foster tallied two hits, one run batted in, and one run scored. Kalley Partyka tallied three hits, one run batted in, and one run scored.
Game Two: Viterbo 4, Mayville State 12
The V-Hawks scored the first two runs of the game before the Comets even had a chance to hit. Mayville State answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits. Jocelyn Ontiveros doubled to right-center with one out to scored Gutierrez, Duval, and Kemball to take the lead right back. Viterbo tied the game at three in the top of the third inning on two hits.
MSU would take the lead right back in the bottom of the inning on three hits. The Comets had the bases loaded with zero outs before back-to-back outs. With two outs in the inning and possibly leaving the bases loaded in the third inning, a pinch-hit single from Nicole Fierro scored two runs and then followed by a single from Larkin to scored three runs in the inning.
Another big inning for the Comets in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring four runs on three hits. Three straight hits from the Comets led to two runs scored by Kemball and Foster to take an 8-3 lead. Later in the inning, Larkin singled in two runs Ontiveros and Milligan to extend to a 10-3 lead and looking to complete a second straight run-rule game. Viterbo would manage to score one run in the top of the fifth inning to put the Comet lead at 10-4.
Ontiveros doubled, for the second time in the game, to left-center to score Kemball. The next batter Roeges, singled to left field to score the game-winning run and pick up their second run-rule game of the game. Courtney Boll picked up the win in game two allowing zero hits, one earned run, and one strikeout in 2.0 innings pitched. Sidney Fairbanks started in the circle allowing four hits and one earned run over 3.0 innings pitched. Jocelyn Ontiveros tallied three hits, six runs batted in, and two runs scored in the game. Alissa Foster tallied two hits, three runs scored in four at-bats. Bailey Larkin tallied three runs batted in on two hits.
