Mayville State sweeps Waldorf, extends winning streak to six games

FOREST CITY, IOWA -- Mayville State took to the road Friday to Forest City Iowa, taking on the Waldorf Warriors in the first two games of a four-game North Star Athletic Association Conference series, with the Comets sweeping the first two games of the weekend 10-4 and 12-6, respectively. The wins pushed the Comets winning streak to six games.

Game One: Mayville State 10, Waldorf 4
A seven-run fourth inning for Mayville State propelled the Comets to a 10-4 win in the first game of the doubleheader Friday afternoon in Forest City, Iowa.
With Hayle Boechler and Brooke Roeges on with no outs in the top of the fourth inning, Jocelyn Ontiveros got ahold of a pitch, sending it to right-center field, the first of several Comet home runs on Friday afternoon in the opening game of the doubleheader. Later in the inning, with one out, Mackenzie Duval launched a long single to right field, advancing Dayna Gutierrez to third base, and then later scoring Gutierrez on an errant throw from right field, increasing the score to 5-2, and then Bailey Larkin scored on the play, increasing the lead to four runs.
Shaye Kemball, on the next at-bat, singled up the middle, scoring Duval and putting the Comets ahead by five runs with still one out in the fourth inning.
Alissa Foster nailed a double to right-center field, advancing Kemball one base closer and putting the Comets into threatening position again -- only to have Roeges come up for the second time in the fourth -- grounding out to the shortstop but scoring Kemball, making it 8-2 Mayville State heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Comets increased their added runs -- one in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Foster, and one in the top of the seventh on a single by Kemball.
Kemball pitched seven innings, picking up the win for Mayville State. She gave up four runs on eight hits, struck out four batters and walked three.
The Comets were led by Gutierrez at the plate, who went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Duval, Kemball, Foster and Larkin all finished with multi-hit games for the Comets.

Game Two: Mayville State 12, Waldorf 6
The offensive onslaught continued in the second game, as the Comets posted 12 runs, including a five-run second inning, en route to  the 12-6 win and back-to-back wins on Friday in North Star play.
The Comets got on the board in the top of the second on a single by Madison Milligan, scoring Roeges and Foster and pulling the Comets ahead 2-1 late in the inning, with two outs. On the very next at-bat, Larkin tripled to right, scoring Milligan from first base and extending the Comet lead to two runs. Gutierrez kept the hit train going, smashing a single to second base and scoring Larkin, extending the Comet lead to 4-1.
A Duval walk set up a runner in scoring position at second base in Gutierrez. Then, Kemball singled up the middle, scoring Gutierrez and advancing Duval to second. The Comets ended the second inning ahead 5-1.
Three Comet runs in the third and fourth innings put them in complete control -- ahead 8-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Waldorf stormed back, cutting the lead to 8-5 after five innings, but the Comet offense was too much for Waldorf.
Foster nailed a homer to left field in the first at-bat of the sixth inning, to put the COmets ahead 9-5. After a pair of outs, one on a lineout and the other on a foul ball to first base, Ontiveros grabbed a pitch and sent it over the left field fence, giving the Comets the 10-5 lead, before Milligan lined out to end the top of the sixth. Waldorf cut the lead to four in the bottom of the sixth, setting up an exciting finish.
A pair of singles, one by Duval and the other by Ashlyn Tingey, scored runs and the Comets walked away with the win.
Courtney Boll pitched a complete game 12-hitter, giving up six runs and striking out two batters.
Seven Comet batters had multi-hit games, led by Gutierrez, who finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI; Duval, Kemball, Foster, Tingey, Ontiveros and Milligan also had two hits for the Comets. Milligan drove in four runs in the win.
