Comet Baseball allows one run in doubleheader sweep of Saints

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Mayville State Baseball team swept the Saints by a final score of 13-0 and 11-1 on Friday. The Comets move to 15-8 on the regular season and 4-2 conference record. 

Game One:

The Comets scored two runs in the first inning on three hits. Villanueva singled up the middle that scored courtesy runner Tyler Ferrera and Hughes. Mayville State added another run in the top of the third inning on a single from Garpestad that scored McCorrister to give the Comets a 3-0 lead. MSU extended the lead to four in the fourth inning when Hughes hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Forst.

Mayville State opened the game in the fifth inning by scoring four runs on four hits. Forst doubled to right-center that scored May and Garpestad. In that play, Forst scored on a wild throw from the second baseman. Senden scored the fourth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Wohl to go up eight runs. McCorrister hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to extend the lead to nine. Later that inning, Satrom grounded out to the second baseman that scored May.

The Comets added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning and defeated the Saints 13-0 in seven innings. Theo May finished the game with four hits, two runs scored, and one run batted in. Gunner Garpestad recorded three hits, one run scored, and one run batted in. Four other Comets finished with two hits and a season-high 17 hits in the first game. Parker Stohr pitched a complete game shutout allowing four hits, one walk, and 10 strikeouts.

Game Two:

The Comets started the second game scoring one run in the top of the first inning on one hit. After McCorrister hit his triple, a few pitches later he scored on a wild pitch. MSU scored three runs in the top of the third inning on two hits. Senden led off the third inning with a solo home run. McCorrister hit his second home run of the day in the third inning that scored Wohl to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

Mayville State Comets scored four runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning, and one run in the top of the seventh inning. Presentation College scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to put the final score at 11-1. Jared McCorrister finished with three hits, two runs, and four runs batted in. Sammy Satrom recorded two hits and two runs scored. Connor DiNaro pitched a complete game allowing eight hits, one earned run, and eight strikeouts.
