Comets sweep Dickinson State, push winning streak to five games

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The final weekend of the North Star Athletic Association conference season started on a good note, with the Comets sweeping Dickinson State in double-header action Friday afternoon at Scott Berry Field in Mayville. The Comets won 6-4 and 6-5, in games one and two, respectively. The wins pushed the Comet win streak to five games.

Game One: Mayville State 6, Dickinson State 4

Mayville State jumped out to a 4-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. The big inning for the Comets was a two-run third inning,

Jared McCorrister, who singled to lead off the third inning, scored on an errant throw by Kobe Krenz from Dickinson State. A short time later, Theo May, who reached on the errant throw by Krenz, scored on a ground-out to third base by Skylar Forst. The Comets led 4-0 through three innings.

Dickinson State countered with four more over the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings – tying the game at 4-4, a score that stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Comets got some timely hitting out of their players who can step in at big moments in the game.

Sammy Satrom doubled to deep left-center with one on and one out, scoring Gunnar Garpestad and taking the lead 5-4. Later, with two outs, Marcus Wohl nailed a double down the left-field line, scoring Satrom.

The Comets held off in the top of the ninth.

Kenny Stewart picked up the win, pitching two and two-thirds innings of relief, giving up one hit while striking out five batters. Parker Stohr gave up four runs on six hits in just over six innings of work as starting pitcher.

Wohl and McCorrister were each 2-for-3. Wohl drove in two batters, while McCorrister scored once.
 

Game Two: Mayville State 6, Dickinson State 5

Five runs over the first three innings by Dickinson State were met by a fierce Comet comeback – and the Comets swept Friday's action 6-5, scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Down 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Comets struck gold.

With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Wohl doubled deep to left field, scoring Forst and Satrom and giving the Comets the tying the game at 5-5 with two outs remaining in the bottom of the fifth.

The Comets got the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk by Marcus Hughes, scoring Satrom.

Garpestad, McCorrister and Michael Theisen eachwent 2-for-4, with Wohl going 2-for-3.
