Portland, N.D. – Comets drop NSAA doubleheader against Dickinson State on Friday afternoon at Paul Karlstad Field by a final of 0-9 and 8-10. The Comets drop to 19-19 overall and 15-11 in conference play.
Game One: Dickinson State 9, Mayville State 0
Dickinson State started the scoring in the top of the first inning on one hit and two Mayville State errors that extended the inning for the Blue Hawks. The Blue Hawks would extend the lead in the top of the third inning on a leadoff double followed by a sacrifice bunt and a groundout that gave DSU a three-run lead. The Comet offense could not get anything going through the first three innings only producing one hit and it was a leadoff single by Gutierrez.
The Blue Hawks would continue to separate themselves from the Comets scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning to give them a five-run lead. Dickinson State scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning and two runs in the top of the sixth inning and dropped game one by a final score of 9-0. The Comets tallied two hits in game one from Dayna Gutierrez and Mackenzie Duval. Shaye Kemball took the loss in game one in the circle allowing 10 hits, six earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.
Game Two: Dickinson State 10, Mayville State 8
The Comets were threatening in the bottom of the first inning having a runner on second base with one out and a strikeout looking, and a groundout finished the bottom of the first inning. The Blue Hawks scored the first run of the second game in the top of the second inning on one hit. Mayville State got on the scoreboard for the first time Saturday in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run from Jocelyn Ontiveros. The Comets scored three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-2 on three hits.
Back-to-Back singles with two outs in the inning and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Roeges who rippled a triple to centerfield to clear the bases and give the Comets a 3-2 lead. Mayville State gave the lead right back to the Blue Hawks in the top of the fourth inning allowing seven runs on six hits, and two MSU errors. Mayville State would answer right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning on five hits.
Milligan, Larkin, and Gutierrez all reached to start the inning to give the Comets bases loaded with zero outs. Duval tripled to right-center to clear the bases and cut the lead to 7-9. Kemball, the next batter, singles to left field to cut the lead to one. With the Comets trailing by two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning put the winning run to the plate with one out but back-to-back strikeouts finished the game and would drop game two by a final of 8-10.
After only recording two hits in game one, the Comets would tally 14 hits in game two with five players having multiple hits. Jocelyn Ontiveros went 3-for-3 in game two with two runs scored, one run batted in, and one walk. Brooke Roeges tallied two hits and three runs batted in. Dayna Gutierrez and Madison Milligan each tallied two hits and one run scored in the loss. Courtney Boll took the loss in game two allowing nine hits, four earned runs, one walk, and one strikeout in 3.2 innings pitched. Sidney Fairbanks pitched 3.1 innings in relief allowing three hits, one earned run, and two walks.
