Comets drop two games to Blue Hawks, head into NSAA tournament as four seed

Portland, N.D. – The Mayville State University Softball team dropped two close games to Dickinson State on Saturday at Paul Karlstad Field by a final score of 1-3, and 2-3. The Comets finish the regular season with a 19-21 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the NSAA.

Game One: Dickinson State 3, Mayville State 1

The Comets struck first in the bottom of the second inning on a lead-off solo home run from Jocelyn Ontiveros, her second of the weekend, to give the Comets a 1-0 lead. The Blue Hawks answered with three runs on two hits in the top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Kemball struck out the next batter with runners on second and third to prevent any more scoring. After the Comets went back-to-back innings going down in order, Ashlyn Tingey led the bottom of the fifth inning with a double but could not advance past second base and the Comets left a runner in scoring position.

Mayville State could not get any runners on the base for the sixth and seventh inning as the Comets dropped game one by a final score of 3-1. Ashlyn Tingey led the Comets with two hits in the first game. Shaye Kemball pitched a complete game allowing four hits, three earned runs, one walk, and nine strikeouts. Ontiveros scored and drove in the only run hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.

Game Two: Dickinson State 3, Mayville State 2

After a leadoff single to left field, Gutierrez advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Duval but on the wild throw from the second baseman tried to advance to home and was thrown out by the left fielder. Dickinson State scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning on one hit. The Blue Hawks scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Back-to-back one-out singles from Ontiveros, Roeges and a walk from Milligan loaded the bases with one out. The Comets grounded into two fielders' choices to end the inning and threat. The Comets scored their first two runs in game two in the bottom of the seventh inning. A double followed by a single put runners on first and third with zero outs. A single with one out from Milligan scored Foster.

Later in the inning, Partyka produced a run batted ground out to the second baseman that scored Ontiveros that scored the second run of the inning, but the Comets would drop game two by a final score of 3-2. Jocelyn Ontiveros tallied two hits, one run scored in the second game. Dayna Gutierrez, Alissa Foster, Brooke Roeges, Madison Milligan, and Ashlyn Tingey tallied one hit. Courtney Boll pitched a complete game allowing six hits, three earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.

The Comets are back in action this week for the North Star Athletic Association Conference Tournament host by Bellevue University starting on May 6th. The Comets will be the fourth seed and the bracket will come out on Sunday afternoon.
