Bellevue, Neb. – The Mayville State Softball recovers from a game one loss to advance to the second day of the NSAA Conference Tournament.
Game One: Dakota State 3, Mayville State 1
The Trojans started the scoring right away in the top of the first inning on two hits and two free bases from the Comets pitcher. The bases were loaded with one out and Kemball picked up a strikeout and got the next batter popped out to the shortstop to escape a dangerous inning for the Comets. The Comets would answer back in the bottom of the third inning scoring one run on two hits, and one Trojan error. A one-out single from Gutierrez followed by a wild pitch put her on second base with one out when Duval singled to centerfield to score Gutierrez.
Duval was the game leading run on second base with one out but a fly out and groundout ended the inning and the threat. Dakota State would take the lead right back in the next half inning on three hits to take a 2-1 lead on the Comets. The Trojans added another run in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run from Lopez to left field to extend the DSU lead to two. Mayville State threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning when a leadoff walk and an error by the Trojans put runners on second and third with one out.
A groundout to the pitcher and a strikeout ended the chance to tie the game. For the second straight inning, the Comets had a runner on third base with two outs and failed to score that runner and the Comets would drop game one by a final of 1-3.
Dayna Gutierrez finished the game with half of the Comet hits and scored the only run in the loss.
Shaye Kemball pitched a complete game allowing nine hits, three earned runs, one walk, and five strikeouts.
Game Two: Presentation College 1, Mayville State 9
The Comets started the scoring in the elimination game putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. The first two runner reached base before a fly out to left field advanced both runners to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Foster delivered the one out hit with a double to right center to score Duval and Gutierrez. Mayville State added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on two hits.
Duval led off the inning with a bunt single followed by a stolen base. After a groundout advanced Duval to third base with less than one out, Foster doubled to centerfield to score Duval and take a 3-0 lead. The next batter Ontiveros hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Foster to get their biggest lead of the day. Presentation College would score their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-1.
The Comets added two more run in the bottom of the fifth inning on one hit. Foster led the inning with a single to center field and then back-to-back hit by pitched filled the bases with one out in the inning. Foster would score during Milligan's at-bat on a wild pitch and then a few pitches later Milligan hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Roeges to give the Comets a 6-1 lead.
The Comets added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the game by the run rule.
Alissa Foster finished the game with three hits, three runs batted in, and two runs scored.
Mackenzie Duval tallied two hits, scored three runs, and drew one walk.
Jocelyn Ontiveros tallied one hit, two runs batted in, and scored one run.
Shaye Kemball recorded one hit, one run scored, and drove in one run in the win. Kemball also pitched a complete game allowing eight hits, one earned run, two walks, and struck out six batters in 6.0 innings pitched.
