Williamsburg, Ky. – Point Park scored seven runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh to defeat the Comets in the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament. The Comets move to 35-17 on the regular season.
The Comets scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning on a single off the bat of McCorrister that scored Satrom, who reached on a hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. The Pioneers tied the game at one in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run from Pfluger.
Mayville State would take the lead back in the top of the fifth inning on three hits including a double from McCorrister that scored Tyler Ferrera. Later in the inning, the Comets had the bases loaded with one out, looking to extend the lead, when MSU grounded into a double play to end the inning. Point Park would take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring two runs.
The Comets would tie the game in the top of the sixth inning after back-to-back singles from Forst and Garpestad. Satrom reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and third with one out before a sacrifice fly from Villanueva to right field scored Forst to tie the game at three. Mayville State was threatening in the top of the seventh inning when they had back-to-back singles with two outs to put runners on the corners with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning.
The Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to go on and win the game by a final of 3-9. Alexander DeCaro took the loss for the Comets going 0.1 innings allowing one hit, two earned runs, and one strikeout. Parker Stohr started on the mound going 5.0 innings allowing three hits, three earned runs, three walks, and struck out four. Kenneth Stewart went 0.2 innings out of the bullpen. Ramsay Taliaferro pitched the last two innings allowing three hits, four runs, one earned run, and struck out one batter.
Offensively, The Comets were led by Jared McCorrister finishing with two hits in four at-bats, two runs batted in, and one walk. Gunner Garpestad finished with three hits in four at-bats in the loss. Marcus Wohl tallied two hits in five at-bats for the Comets. Skylar Forst, Theo May, Michael Theisen, and Marcus Hughes each tallied a hit in the loss.
