Valley City, N.D. – The Comets scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat the Vikings in the second day of the conference tournament 10-4 on Saturday night. The Comets will play Bellevue University at 11:00 am in the winner's bracket game.
The Comets started the scoring in the top of the first inning on two hits one Comet error to jump out to an early 3-0 lead on the Vikings. The first two runners reached on a hit by pitch and a bunt single from Hughes put runners at first and second with zero outs. During the next at-bat, both runners advanced on a errant throw from Kliniske to put runners on second and third with zero outs. The bases were loaded when a wild pitch scored Fererra.
Hughes scored the second run on a ground out to third base off the bat of Hughes to give MSU a 2-0 lead. Then Forst double down the left field line to score Theisen and take a 3-0 lead after one-half inning. The Vikings would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the third inning on two hits. Mayville State would answer with two runs in the top of the fourth inning on one hit and one Valley City State error.
Satrom scored the first run of the inning on a fielders choice off the bat of Hughes and Villanueva scored later on an error from the catcher to score the second run of the inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, VCSU would hit a solo home run to cut the MSU lead to two. Valley City State would put a threat together in the bottom of the seventh inning by loading the bases with two outs in the inning, but relief pitcher Kenneth Stewart would get a groundout to the first baseman to end the inning.
The first three batters reached in the top of the eighth inning on walks and hit by pitches to load the bases with zero outs. The first run of the inning was scored on a ground out off the bat of Villanueva to score Forst. In the following at-bat, Satrom scored on a wild pitch to give the Comets a four-run advantage. Hughes hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped by the right fielder that scored Garpestad and Rocholl to take a 10-3 lead. Then
Tyler Ferrera singled to right field to score Hughes to take a seven-run lead and win the game 10-4.
The Comets were led by Skylar Forst who recorded two hits, one run scored, and one run batted in.
Sammy Satrom scored two runs and recorded one hit.
Michael Theisen tallied one hit and scored one run. Connor DiNaro tallied the win on the mound going 5.0 innings allowing six hits, three earned runs, two walks, and struck out three batters. Alex DeCaro pitched 1.1 innings allowing one hit and walked one. Kenneth Stewart pitched 1.2 innings allowing one hit, one earned run walked four batters and struck out three.
Ramsay Taliaferro pitched the ninth inning faced three batters and struck out one.
