Comets top Warriors in 87-53 win on Saturday

Mayville, N.D. - The Comets Women's Basketball team hosted the Waldorf Warriors Saturday at the Lewy Lee for a North Star conference contest. Mayville State dominated the second quarter enroute to a comfortable 87-53 victory.

The game started fairly even, as the Comets got out to a small lead with the Warriors hanging in. A quick 5-0 run turned a 12-all tie into a 17-12 lead for Mayville State. A bucket by each team to finish the quarter made the score 19-14 after 10 minutes.

The Comets made their decisive run in the 2nd quarter. A Waldorf jump shot reduced the lead to 26-20 with 7:32 left in the second. Mayville State's defense stepped up and held the Warriors to only one more basket.

The Comets offense picked up behind Jordan Zrust and Mackenzie Hughes, as they scored 10 of the final 18 points of the second period. This 18-2 run gave the Comets a commanding 44-22 advantage.

"A good basketball team is a team that has a good bench. Our bench plays a very vital and crucial role in our success during games. They bring energy and punch along with depth off the bench to our team," said head coach Dennis Hutter.

Mayville State kept up the pressure in the third, opening the quarter with a 13-4 run. Hughes continued to be the engine in the Comets offense, as she connected on five of six field goals in the third quarter for 10 points.

Mayville State shot 50% in the third quarter with only one turnover to bump the lead to 31 points at 69-38.

The fourth quarter saw all 16 Comets get playing time with seven different players scoring. The Warriors kept playing hard but would not get closer than 28 points as the Comets cruise to the 87-53 win.

The Comets shot 58% from the field, 70% from two point range for the game and amassed 14 steals.

"Obviously we shot the ball better. I thought we had more flow on offense and moved the ball more. We scored out of our defense again tonight which helped jump start us early in the second half," added Hutter.

Hughes collected her second 20 point game of the weekend, finishing with 23 points and also racking up 5 steals. Zrust also cracked the 20 point barrier with 21 and Jes Mertens stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The win gives the Comets a 13-2 record, 2-0 in conference. Mayville State will travel to Valley City to battle the Vikings on Wednesday, January 17th, tip off is at 5:30pm.

"We will have to be more sound fundamentally against Valley. Little things like rebounding and taking care of the ball are a must to get a win against Valley City," added Hutter.
