Madison, SD - The #13 Comets Women's Basketball team faced the #11 Dakota State Trojans in a top 25, North Star match up. Mayville State's offense could not get on track as they fell to the Trojans 71-48.
The Comets started fast and scored the first seven points of the game, as
Erin Walcker tallied five of those points. Dakota State responded with a 12-0 run of their own to take the lead 12-7. A three point play by
Jordan Zrust put Mayville State back ahead 15-14. The Trojans then scored the last seven points of the quarter to take a 21-15 lead.
Dakota State added six more points to open the second quarter to expand the lead to 27-15. Their advantage hovered between 10 and 13 points the remainder of the quarter.
Alex Page beat the buzzer with a basket to slice the lead to 35-25 going into halftime.
The teams traded baskets for most of the third quarter, until a 9-2 run late by the Trojans took their lead to 51-34. The third quarter ended with the Trojans ahead 55-39.
Mayville State rattled off the first five points to trim the deficit to 55-44, but the Trojans once again turned the tables and outscored the Comets 16-4 the rest of the way to win 71-44.
The Comets were not able to get to the free throw line as they have all this season, only getting three attempts. This and turnovers short-circuited the offense getting any momentum.
Mackenzie Hughes and Zrust scored nine points apiece to pace the Comets, and
CJ Decker finished with eight points. Zrust grabbed five rebounds and
Jes Mertens added three steals.
The loss drops the Comets record to 15-3 and 4-1 in conference play. Mayville State looks to rebound against the Bellevue Bruins Saturday, tip off at 3:00pm.
