Baseball ends fall season with sweep over Blue Hawks

Dickinson, N.D. - Mayville State Baseball hit the road Wednesday for a double header against the Dickinson State Blue Hawks. In two games, the Comets scored 21 runs to get the sweep and wrap up their fall season.

"I am extremely happy with how we battled through today. The guys showed an exceptional amount of toughness and resiliency and I cannot express enough how proud I am of their efforts," said head coach Billy Tomblin. "We talk a lot about it not mattering how it looks, just get the job done and we did that today."

Game 1: W 14-13

The Comets struck first, scoring 2 runs in the second inning. Carson Lundmark led the inning off with a double to right field and Zachary Evanochko moved him over to third.

However, Lundmark would be thrown out after Brock Barlow hit a ground ball to third and the Blue Hawks went home with it.

With 2 outs and runners at first and third, Juan Villarreal reached on an error by the Blue Hawk's third baseman, scoring Rankin. Jack McQueen then double to left field scoring Barlow to put the Comets up 2-0.

Mayville State would score 3 runs on 3 hits in the third to extend their lead 5-0. These runs came from a three run home run from Zachary Evanochko.

Dickinson State would finally respond as they cut their deficit to three, by putting two runs on the board.

Heading into the 4th inning, the score 5-2, the Comets would explode offensively. They would score 6 runs on 6 hits.

Cameron Goff blasted a 2 run home run over right field and Chris Shopbell and Riley Rankin would both have RBI doubles in the inning.

Entering the bottom of the 4th inning, the score was 11-2, the Blue Hawks needed to get their offense going and they did just that. They would score 5 runs on 5 hits making it 11-7 Comets.

They would then score 2 runs in the 5th and 1 in the sixth to head into the 7th 11-10, Comets.

Mayville State tacked on 3 more runs in the top of the 7th as the Blue Hawks seemed to fall apart defensively having two errors, eventually resulting in runs.

The Blue Hawks threatened the Comets in the bottom of the 7th, scoring 3 more runs but that's as close as they would get and Mayville State would squeak by with an offensive battle win, 14-13.

Chris Shopbell - 2-4, 1 RBI, 2 2B, 1 BB,
Cameron Goff - 1-3, 2 RBI, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 HBP

Game 2: W 8-7

Game two would be another 7 inning offensive battle between the Comets and the Blue Hawks.

Mayville State started things off by scoring 2 runs in the top of the first. Cameron Goff would be hit by pitch with two outs, bringing Carson Lundmark to the plate. Lundmark singled to centerfield.

With Goff in scoring position, Zachary Evanochko smoked a double to right field scoring both Goff and Lundmark.

Much like game one, the Blue Hawks would find more ways to respond to the Comets' hot bats, scoring 3 in the bottom of the first taking a 3-2 lead.

With two outs in the top of the second, Jack McQueen hit a double to left and Jalen Denton singled to right, tying things up 3-3.

Again, the Blue Hawks managed to respond, this time scoring 3 runs on two hits to take the lead 5-3.

Bats would be quiet for both teams until the top of the 5th when the Comets were able to take the lead 6-5, scoring 3 runs on 3 hits. Two of these runs came from back to back solo home runs from Shopbell and Goff.

No surprise here as Dickinson State tacked on one run in the bottom of the fifth to tie things up 6-6. They would add one more on in the bottom of the 6th to take the lead 7-6.

The top of the seventh brought Shopbell to the plate. He singled to right and stole second and would eventually advance to third on a fly ball to right from Lundmark.

With two outs and Shopbell at third, the Blue Hawks intentionally walked Evanochko, bringing Riley Rankin to the plate who was 0-3 on the day.

Rankin singled to right field, scoring Shopbell, advancing Evanochko to third, and tying the game up 7-7.

With runners on first and third, two outs and a tie ball game, Brock Barlow singled to right field scoring Evanochko to boost the Comets to a 8-7 lead.

The freshman Marshall Judisch would be able to hold the Blue Hawks in the bottom of the 7th and Mayville State would get their fourth win over the Blue Hawks this fall.

Derek Palmiere got the start in game two. He gave up 5 runs on 5 hits in 2 innings of work.

Jack Patten took over for Palmiere in the 3rd inning, going three full innings, giving up just 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 2.

Marshall Judisch closed things out for the Comets, pitching two full innings of work, giving up just 1 run on 1 hit and striking out 3.

The Comets end their fall season at 5-3 and look forward to picking things back up in February.

"The biggest change from game one of this fall to today was our competitiveness. It's something we lacked last year and has been a focal point this year and it was good to see that growth happen in the last month," said Tomblin. "The biggest challenge we face now is continuing to grow that throughout the winter and into the spring."
