Comets Baseball opens up spring season with a 3-1 series win over Hastings

Hastings, Neb. - Mayville State Comets Baseball opened their season back up this weekend in Nebraska taking on the Hastings Broncos. The Comets, who were 5-3 entering this weekend, scored 25 runs and won 3 of their 4 games against the Broncos.

"Anytime you can win a series it's a great weekend. Winning is hard no matter who you are playing so I am very happy with and for the guys," said head coach Billy Tomblin. "We have some things we need to get cleaned up but I thought we pitched it pretty well overall, the offense started to come around on day two and showed what they are capable of. Defensively, we were extremely solid. We will enjoy the 9 hour bus ride back to Mayville, hopefully get some rest & get back to work tomorrow."

Game 1: W 2-1

- Comets get on the board first in the 2nd inning after a Bronco error which scored Jack McQueen
- Hastings singles to right field in the 5th to tie things up 1-1
- Broncos strand 2 runners in the bottom of the 7th to head to extras
- Carson Lundmark and Cam Goff hit back to back singles
- A pass ball scores C. Lundmark to put the Comets up 2-1
- Broncos lead the bottom of the 7th off with a walk & a single
- Jake Hutter is able to get 3 outs in a row for the save

"Garret did a great job on the mound for us in game one. He commanded his fastball and was able to spin the breaking ball for a strike. Jake came in and was able to close the door and get us a win," said Tomblin. "The bats never really came around for us. Velasquez did a good job on his end mixing speeds and pounding the zone, keeping us very off balanced through his 6 innings of work."

Game 2: L 10-1

- Hastings scores first after the Broncos hit an RBI triple to right in the second inning
- Comets immediately respond in the 3rd after Riley Rankin & Jalen Denton get back to back singles
- Chris Shopbell moves them to second and third and C. Lundmark hits a sack fly to right to tie things 1-1
- Things were quiet on both sides until the Broncos have an explosive 5th inning scoring 10 runs
- Hastings scores another run in the bottom of the 6th, taking the game 10-1

"Jaxon got his first collegiate start and gave us a solid four innings. He lost some feel for his stuff there in the fifth, but overall I was pleased with what he gave us," added Tomblin. "On their end, Miller followed what Velasquez did in game one, mixed his speeds well, pounded the zone and really neutralized us offensively.

Game 3: W 16-8

- Comets score 5 runs on 4 hits to kick off their Sunday doubleheader
- Mayville State scores 2 more runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to extend their lead 7-0
- Broncos respond and plate 3 in the bottom of the 3rd to get within 4
- Comets get 2 insurance runs in the top of the 4th, Broncos respond with another run
- Comets score 6 runs on 5 hits in the top of the 5th, 15-4 Mayville State
- Hastings finds a way to plate 4 more runs, but the Comets take the game 16-8

"Our mission today was to apply pressure, carry ourselves with an edge and play for the Comet Brotherhood. I feel like we did that in game 3," said Tomblin. "Anytime you can score in 6 of 7 offensive innings and have four guys with multi hit games, you are going to be tough to neat. Palmiere gave us a good start and we were able to see Jack Wold come in and close it out."

Game 4: W 6-2

- Quinn Pershing puts the Comets on the board first with an RBI single up the middle
- Broncos respond right away with 2 runs to take the lead early
- Offense was quite on both teams, as not much action throughout the next 4 innings
- Pershing & McQueen the 6th off with back to back walks & Tony Villarreal is hit by a pitch to load the bases
- Ranking hits an RBI single to right field to tie the game up
- Bases loaded, no outs, Denton hits a 2 run RBI single down the right field line
- Chris Shopbell singles to centerfield to put the Comets up 5-2
- Mayville State added another run in the top of the 7th to extend their lead 6-2
- Calvin Watkins would pitch a full 7 innings, giving up just 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 7

"Calvin had a little bit of a tough first inning but really dialed it in 2-7 and was able to college a CG," said Tomblin. "Offensively, we were a little quiet and missed some opportunities early in the game but found a way late to scratch a few across and do enough to get a series win."

The Comets improve to 8-4 overall and will be back in action next Friday and Saturday as they will play a 4 game series at Mount Marty. For full schedule details visit: https://msucomets.com/sports/baseball/schedule
