Mayville, N.D. - Comets Women's Basketball returned back to the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse on Tuesday night for their final home game of the 2024 calendar year.
Mayville State took on the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars in a non-conference match up. Freshman
Misti Zempel put up a career high 22 points to help boost her team to a 98-55 win over the Cougars.
Alex Page led the first quarter with 8 points and went 2-3 from behind the arc. The Comets would lead 21-10 after 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, it would be an even team effort as six different Comets would score at least 4 points. Mayville State headed into the locker room at halftime leading the Cougars 45-25.
Zempel would be perfect in the third quarter going 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from behind the arc, putting up 10 points. The freshman would continue her hot shooting into the fourth where Zempel went 3-4 from the field and added 3 rebounds.
Overall, she went near perfect, making 9-10 from the field for a career high 22 points in just 22 minutes played. She also snagged 5 rebounds and 4 steals and added one block.
Mackenzie Hughes, who swept the NSAA player of the week awards for offense and defense this week, continued to shine offensively. She scored 17 points, had 9 rebounds, 4 assists and a 6 steals. Hughes has scored 168 points in just 7 games played; she averages 24 ppg.
Jes Mertens continued to stuff the stat sheet, putting up 17 points, grabbing 9 rebounds - all defensive, passing out 7 assists and snagging 4 steals. Mertens has 45 steals in just 7 games.
The Comets will enjoy their weekend off and head to Morris next Tuesday for another match up with the Cougars. Tip off will be reversed as men's tip off at 5:30pm and the women at 7:30pm.
Mayville State will return home Friday, January 3rd as they will host Dickinson State at 5:30pm.
