Women's Basketball's hot offense gets season off to a 2-0 start

Mayville, N.D. - Mayville State University Comets Women's Basketball tipped off their 2024-25 season in the Lewy Lee Saturday and Sunday, hosting the Canadian Mennonite Blazers both days.

New head coach, Ryan Carpenter, got his first wins under the helm as the Comets passed the century mark twice & held the Blazers to just 40 points in both games. 

Six different Comets had career highs Saturday and six more had career highs Sunday afternoon.

Game 1: W 102-38

The Comets got off to a slow start early, but managed to outscore the Blazers in each quarter. 

Their biggest quarter was the 2nd, where they scored 31 points and held the Blazers to just 10. 

In the second half, the Comets' offense continued and their defense just got better. They held the Blazers to 15 points and just 4 in the 3rd quarter.

Senior, Mackenzie Hughes, led the way with a career high 28 points. She also had a career high 8 rebounds and career high 7 steals. She was 11-17 from the floor and had 3 assists.

Senior Alex Page had a double double, scoring a career high 19 points and snagging 11 rebounds. She tied her career high with 3 steals on the night.

Senior Jes Mertens followed close behind, bringing in 18 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and a career high 9 steals. 

Annika Reierson, in her first career start had 6 steals and 4 assists - both career highs.

Newcomers Hannah Stark and Misti Zempel both recorded 8 rebounds. Stark had 12 points and Zempel had 16. 

Ava Butler had a career high 5 assists and 2 steals and Gracie Kaczynski snagged 3 rebounds for a career high.

Game 2: W 110-37

Sunday's game would involve a hotter offense and have even better defense.

The Comets didn't let the Blazers score more than 10 points in each quarter. 

Jes Mertens would have her first ever career triple double, racking up a career high 25 points, 11 rebounds and career high 10 assists. She also had 8 steals. 

Hughes had 20 points and a career high 8 assists; Hannah Stark had 18 points and 5 rebounds; Alex Page had another double double with 17 points and a career high 12 rebounds.

Reierson had her first career double double with 12 points and career high 11 rebounds. 

Mollie Robbins recorded 4 rebounds which was also a career high. Kaczynski had another night of career highs in both points and assists. She had 7 and 2.

The Comets will hit the road next week as they will be tested in Montana facing two future Frontier opponents. They will take on Montana Tech, Thursday at 4pm (CT) & Montana Western at 6:30pm (CT) Friday.
