Madison, S.D. – Mayville State Comets Men's Basketball headed to Madison, SD Saturday night to take on the 7-5 Dakota State Trojans.
The Comets, who are on an 8-game winning streak, were able to hold off the Trojans and get their second NSAA win. Mayville State has not lost since November 9th against No. 15 ranked Northwestern.
"Winning on the road in this league is extremely tough, especially with the two we just played," said head coach
Brandon McGruder. "So it feels really good to go into break 2-0 in the league."
1st Half:
- Comets win the tip & London Williams gets the first points of the game
- Williams follows up with a 3 pointer to get the Comets out to a 5-0 start
- JJ White, Jr. nails a 3 putting the Comets up 9-0 in the first two minutes
- Trojans respond with 5 unanswered points
- 13-10 Comets at 15-minute mark
- Trojans 3 pointer ties it up at 15-15
- Leomar Castillo sinks a 3 to take the lead 18-15
- 24-18 halfway through the first half
- Trojans tie it up 26-26 at 7-minute mark
- Comets get out to a 10-point lead by going on a 10-0 run
- Steal by JJ White, Jr. then he races down the floor for an easy layup to put the Comets up by 12
- After the first 16 minutes of play, the Comets were shooting 60% from the field as they were 15 of 25
- Mayville State hits the locker room with a 13-point lead 44-31
2nd Half:
- London Williams starts the 2nd half with the first 2 points with a pass from Cristian Butler
- Started the half off with a 4-0 run
- Comets lead by 19 after the first four minutes of play in the second half
- Trojans cut their deficit to 12, 61-49 with 9 minutes remaining
- Comets remained in control most of the 2nd half, leading 70-55 with 2:30 left
- Despite the Trojans outscoring the Comets 32-28, Mayville State never lost their lead in the second half
Final 2 minutes:
- Trojans nail a 3 pointer to make it a 10-point game
- Comets would get fouled & Williams would sink both free throws to put their lead back up to 12
- Williams had a steal on the next possession allowing the Comets control the final minute of the game

"I thought our defense was really solid tonight. We stayed disciplined and forced some turnovers that we converted into points," said McGruder. "Our shot selection for the most part was pretty good. We wanted to get some baskets around the hoop and we were able to score 40 points in the paint."
The Comets will have a two week break until they hit the court again. They will travel to the Bellevue Classic in Nebraska to take on Morningside at 2:00pm on Sunday, December 29th.
