Mayville, ND - The No. 12 Comets Women's Basketball team looked to win on Senior Day against the Bellevue Bruins. Mayville State outscored the Bruins 27-5 from the free throw line and needed all of them to survive a 68-66 victory.
Bellevue jumped out to a 6-1 lead as the Comets were ice cold to start the game. Mayville State connected on five of six free throws to stay in the game, and a
Mackenzie Hughes triple tied the game at 8 with three minutes left. Both offenses picked up to finish the quarter, and the Bruins held a slim 16-15 lead after one period.
The Comets used an 14-2 run early in the second to retake the lead at 32-22. Hughes and
Jes Mertens each scored five points to pace the Comet attack. The Bruins clawed back to within four points by halftime at 34-30.
Bellevue opened the third quarter with five straight points to retake the lead 35-34. The teams traded the lead for the rest of the quarter, as neither team held a lead of larger than two points. With 10 minutes left to play, the Comets managed to hold a 50-49 advantage.
Four minutes into the fourth quarter, the score was knotted at 54. Then the Comets ripped off a decisive 9-0 run over the next three minutes to leap ahead 63-54.
Mayville State maintained a seven point lead with a minute to play, but had to withstand a furious comeback attempt by the Bruins.
Bellevue attempted a game-winning three point attempt with 2 seconds left, but it missed the mark and the Comets escaped with the 68-66 win.
Jordan Zrust added another double-double to her year with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Hughes added 17 points, Mertens finished with 15 and
Alex Page blocked four shots on the night.
"We really grinded it out tonight. We did not play our best but you are not always going to play your best. Good teams win, when they don't play well. I am very proud of this team and this weekend. We played two very good teams and found a way to get a sweep along with a top 10 win. It was a good weekend for our team," said Head Coach
Dennis Hutter.
The win boosts the Comets record to 20-3, 9-1 in the North Star where they are tied for first place with Dakota State. Mayville State finishes their regular season on the road against the Viterbo V-Hawks and Waldorf Warriors next weekend.
