Yankton, S.D. - The Comets Baseball team opened their spring schedule with a doubleheader against the Mount Marty Lancers in Yankton, SD. Mayville State fell to the Lancers in both games 12-2 and 8-1.
"Definitely not how anyone wants to start the spring but it is what it is and we need to get focused on finding a way to get better tomorrow," said head coach
Billy Tomblin.
Game 1:
Mount Marty scored in the first four innings to jump out to an 8-0 lead. The Lancers tacked four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to bump up the lead to 12-0.
Mayville State sparked a rally in the seventh.
Sam Hilgersom and
Ricky Marquez both singled to lead off the seventh. A one out walk by
Anthony Villanueva filled the bases.
The Comets then took advantage of a Lancers error, which scored both Higersom and Marquez. Mount Marty got out of the inning and won 12-2.
Hilgersom, Marquez and
Chris Shopbell got hits for the Comets and
Riley Rankin drew two walks.
Game 2:
Game two started much better, and Rankin led off the game with a home run blast. The Lancers responded with an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at 1.
The Comets threatened in the second inning, as singles by
Teigen Parenteau and
Avery Kirkup and a walk by Marquez loaded the bases with one out. Mayville State was unable to push any runs over, which left the score at 1-1.
Mount Marty broke the game open in the third inning as they erupted for five runs.
The Comets loaded the bases again in the fourth with a
Michael Feralio double, Parenteau walk and Kirkup single. However, the Lancers escaped the inning unscathed.
Two more Lancer runs made the score 8-1. The Comets could not string together any offense the rest of the way as they fell to Mount Marty.
Rankin and Kirkup each had two hits to pace the Comets attack.
Colby Snider pitched 1.2 innings of relief and allowed only one hit.
The Comets record now stands at 2-7. Mayville State is back in action with another doubleheader against the Lances, first pitch is 12:00pm.
"Today can be viewed as a failure or it can be viewed as an opportunity to learn from our mistakes and grow individually and collectively," added Tomblin.
