Box Score Mayville, ND - Men's basketball took on the Dickinson State Blue Hawks Saturday night where Juan Carlos Canahaute scored a career-high 23 points propelling Mayville State to a crucial 87-74 win.

The teams traded the lead multiple times through the first half. The Comets scored eight consecutive points to turn an 18-18 tie into a 26-18. Dickinson responded with a 13-4 run of their own to reclaim the lead at 31-30.

The Blue Hawk lead was short-lived as Mayville State finished the half with an 11-2 run to go into halftime ahead 41-33. Canahuate poured in 17 crucial first half points and Darren Jones added 10 points of his own to drive the Comets offense.

The second half bared striking similarity to Friday's game against Valley City, as the Comets managed a small lead and fought off numerous Blue Hawk challenges.

Dickinson hit some early three pointers to get within 2 at 45-43, only for Mayville State to score five straight to bump the lead back to seven points.

The Blue Hawks trimmed the lead to 56-61 with eleven minutes remaining, but the Comets once again responded by going on a 9-3 run to boost their lead to 70-59. Dickinson attempted one last comeback with seven consecutive points to climb to within seven points with just under three minutes remaining.

The Comets slammed the door shut by finishing the game on an 11-5 run to win 87-74.

All five Comets starters finished in double figures, led by Canahuate's 23. Canahaute also pulled down nine rebounds and handed out seven assists. Jones finished with 17, Jamison Kramer added 15 points and eight rebounds, John White Jr. hit three treys on his way to 15 points and Thomas Gieske tallied 13 points.

"I was pleased with our second half performance tonight. We've came out a bit flat to start halves previously and we came out with some juice last night," said head coach Brandon McGruder. "I think we needed a little 'home cooking' after a four game road stretch. It was good for us to see some shots go in and get our confidence back."

The win bumps the Comets record to 17-6 overall and 5-3 in the North Star. Mayville State will take on the Dakota State Trojans next Friday at the Lewy Lee, tip off is at 7:30pm.
