Parkville, Mo. – The Comets Baseball team finished out their four-game series with Waldorf Friday, dropping the first but winning the second.
Mayville State went 3-1 with the Warriors.
"Anytime you can go 3-1 in a series it's a good weekend. The challenge is when you have an opportunity to sweep, you must find a way to get it done. The biggest takeaway from the weekend is that we showed some things that will be needed to make a push; toughness, resiliency, competitiveness," said head coach
Billy Tomblin. "It doesn't matter how it looks its all about finding a way and we showed that we are capable which is a huge step in the right direction."
Game 1: L 4-6
The first inning would get Waldorf off to an early lead as they were able to plate 5 runs on 4 hits.
Ricky Marquez would lead the Comets off with a single and
Chris Shopbell came up to bat with 2 outs and hit a double scoring him.
A walk and an error would put Mayville State in scoring position and
Carson Lundmark would hit an RBI double to right.
Entering the top of the 6
th the score was 5-2 Warriors.
The Comets would inch their way closer scoring 2 runs on three hits in the bottom of the 6th to make the score 5-4.
The Warriors would plate another run in the 7
th and take the game 6-4.
Mark Turnquist would start on the mound for the Comets, however, he was pulled quickly as he gave up 4 runs on 3 hits.
Connor Cory would come in for Turnquist and give up just 2 runs on 7 hits. He struck out 5.
The top of the line up continued to contribute for the Comets. Lundmark, Shopbell,
Anthony Villanueva and
Marcus Hughes had an RBI a piece.
"We came out unbelievably flat in the first game today [Friday]. Things we did really well on day 1 of the series, we didn't do and ultimately it lead to us to taking a loss."
Game 2: W 6-4
The Comets looked to get back on track in game two.
Hughes led the game off being hit by a pitch and then stole second. A Warrior error would allow Hughes to score.
Hughes would then lead off the 3
rd for Mayville State with a single to left. He would steal again and advance to third on another Warrior error.
Another Waldorf error and a hit by pitch would put runners on and bring
Sam Hilgersom up to bat.
Hilgersom would hit a 2 out double to right field plating two. Comets 4, Warriors 0.
The Comets would add two more runs in the bottom of the 4
th but Waldorf would challenge them by scoring 3 in the top of the 5
th and another in the top of the 6
th.
But that would be all for both offenses and Mayville State would get the win 6-4.
Gregor Farquharson would start on the mound, going a full 5 innings, giving up only 3 runs on 3 hits. He also struck out 5.
Gunnar Thompson would come in for 3 innings where he only have up 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 2.
Jack Patten was able to come in and close things out for the Comets in the 9
th inning.
Mayville State would score 6 runs off of 4 hits.
"Offensively in game two we started out with some quality at bats and scored some runs. But I feel like when we jumped out to a 6-0 lead we went into coast mode," said Tomblin. "The difference maker in game two was our bullpen coming in and finding a way to neutralize their offense which is something we have really struggle with all season."
The Comets will take on Dickinson State for a four game series next weekend.
