Baseball goes 1-2 in series with Dickinson; Game 4 Postponed

Rapid City, S.D. - The Comets Baseball team headed to Rapid City, SD to take on Dickinson State University for a triple header Friday afternoon.

The series was originally set to be in Dickinson but was moved due to weather, game 4 was postponed.

Game 1: W 9-7

The Comets would score first in game one after Chris Shopbell blasted a 2 out home run to right field.

In the top of the second Mayville State would put another run up as Sam HIlgersom doubled to right field scoring Zachary Evanochko, who lead the inning off with a walk.

Shopbell remained hot at the plate and double to center field in the third, scoring Anthony Villanueva.

The Dickinson bats were quiet until the bottom of the 3rd where they would hit a 2 out home run to make the score 3-1 Comets going into the 4th.

Mayville State would capitalize on some mishaps by the Blue Hawks and score 3 runs on 1 hit extending their lead 6-1.

The Blue Hawks would answer and score 2 runs off 3 hits in the bottom of the 4th scrapping back 6-3.

Dickinson would tie things up in the bottom of the 6th by putting up 3 more runs on 4 hits.

Heading into the top of the 7th, the score 6-6, Evanochko doubled to left field and Riley Rankin drove him in to take the lead 7-6.

Bottom of the 7th the Blue Hawks would once again tie things up.

In the top of the 9th, Evanochko would blast a home run to right field to take the lead. A few bats later, an error would allow Rankin to cross the plate.

Comets held off Dickinson in the bottom of the 9th and took the game 9-7.

Mayville State scored 9 runs on 11 hits.

Austin McClure would get the start going 5 and a half innings giving up 5 runs on 10 scattered hits He struck out 3.

Connor Cory would seal the win, pitching 3 innings giving up just 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 2.

Game 2: L 5-6

Game 2 of the series the Comets would be the one to strike first from a Hilgersom home run.

Hilgersom would hit his second home run of the game in the 4th and Villanueva would hit a home run in the 5th.

Mayville State scored the first 5 runs, but a big 5th inning for the Blue Hawks would have things knotted at 5 heading into the 6th.

Dickinson would be able to plate one in the bottom of the 6th and hold the Comets off in the 7th taking the win 6-5.

The Comets scored 5 runs off of 6 hits and the defense had just one error.

Derek Palmiere started on the mound, giving up 5 runs on 8 hits in 4 innings of work; he struck out 3.

Gunner Thompson would come in during the 5th inning and give up 1 run on 3 hits; he struck out 2.

Game 3: 3-5

Mayville State looked to bounce back in game three of the triple header Friday afternoon.

Again, the Comets would be the first to strike – scoring 3 runs in the first.

Marcus Hughes led the game off with a single, Villanueva drove him in with a double to right.

Shopbell & Lundmark both drew walks and Rankin was able to drive in Villanueva with a sing to left.

Hilgersom continued to score runners as he hit a SAC fly scoring Shopbell. The Comets went into the bottom of the 1st up 3-0.

Things would be pretty quiet for both teams until the bottom of the 4th where Dickinson was able to plate one run.

The Blue Hawks would have an offensive sixth inning, scoring 4 runs and taking the lead 5-3. They were able to hold off Mayville State and take the series 2-1.

The Comets scattered 9 hits in the game.

The Comets will take on Briar Cliff Tuesday in a non-conference DH match up.
