Softball Splits with Dickinson Saturday

Dickinson, ND – Comet Softball headed west to take on the Dickinson State Blue Hawks. The Comets would fall in extra innings in game one, but rebounded quickly and take game 2 from the Blue Hawks.

Game 1: L 5-6 (8)

Game 1 started off with a 2 out rally from the Comets. Megan Elliott started it when smoked a double to right center with two outs.

Alyssa Avila then drew a walk and Autumn McGough singled to left loading up the bases for Madison Terres who would hit a single scoring Elliott.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Miquela Pino would hit a ground ball to the deep five six hole, scoring two. The Comets would go into the bottom of the first leading 4-0.

Mayville State would score another run in the second inning when Lindsey Tulla blasted a home run to centerfield extending the Comets lead 5-0.

The Blue Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the second when they hit a 2 out triple followed by a single to cut the deficit 5-1.

Dickinson State would continue to chip away scoring another run in the bottom of the 4th and 2 more in the bottom of the 5th making it 5-4 heading into the 6th.

The Blue Hawks tied things up 5-5 in the bottom of the second and things would head to the 8th.

The Comets would have 2 on base with 2 outs but couldn't push a run across and the Blue Hawks would be able to string together two hits and walk it off in the bottom of the 8th.

7 different Comets would record a hit, 8 on the day.

Madison Terres went 2-4, 1 RBI
Lindsey Tulla went 1-3, 1 HR

Autumn McGough went 1-4
Miquela Pino went 1-3
Erika Howel went 1-3

Emily Haines started in the circle for the Comets, she would give up 6 runs on 14 scattered hits.

"I thought it was awesome to see us open up the game scoring 4 runs. However, we let Dickinson chip away by letting them extend innings instead of us taking easy outs. They are coached well and are a composed team. We knew they would play a full 7 with us and that it was going to come down to the 7th inning," said head coach Jordan Olson

Game 2: W 5-2

Mayville State looked to rebound quickly, and they did just that.

Things would be quiet for both teams until the top of the 3rd when Tulla hit a 2 out single to right.

Mackenzie Hughes, Elliott and Avila would all have singles right in a row allowing 2 runs to score on 4 hits.

The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the 6th when Elliott would smoke a home run over the left field fence making it 3-0.

The Blue Hawks responded by plating one run in the bottom of the 6th to make the score 3-1.

In the top of the 7th MacKenzie Iverson led things off with being hit by a pitch and Hughes would smoke a triple to right center scoring her.

With the score 4-1 and a first and third, pinch runner Kennedy Vettel would steal second and Hughes would be able to score making it 5-1.

Bottom of the 7th, the Blue Hawks would hit a solo home run but pitcher Courtney Boll would finish the game and the Comets would take the win 5-2.

Lindsey Tulla went 1-4
Mackenzie Hughes went 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 3B
Megan Elliott went 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 HR, 1 BB
Alyssa Avila went 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Madison Terres went 2-4

Courtney Boll started game 2 for the Comets. She would give up just 2 runs on 5 hits and would strike out 5!

"Courtney did a great job on the mound today. She kept the hitters off balance and our defense played well behind her," said Olson. "Hitting wise, we made adjustments throughout the full 7 and found ways to score our runners."

The Comets are back in action tomorrow against Dickinson for Game 3 and Game 4 of the series. This game will be dedicated to long time Head Comets Baseball Coach Scott Berry and his battle with cancer. Both teams will be wearing special jerseys in his honor. First pitch is set for 12pm MT – 1pm CT.
