Mayville, N.D. - Mayville State University Comet Baseball kicked off their 2024 fall season on Sunday as they hosted the Jamestown Jimmies in a double header. Both games were 7 innings and the Comets split on the day.
"Overall, it was great to see us have some resilience and toughness today losing game one and bouncing back to win in game two," said head coach
Billy Tomblin. "We have two days to fix some of our mistakes and continue to get better before we head to Jamestown for another game Wednesday."
Game 1: L 1-6
Things were pretty quiet for both teams in game one until the third inning when Jamestown was able to get on the board with a single to drive in a run.
The Comets would answer right away in the bottom of the third when freshman Tony Villarreal led things off with an infield single and
Jack McQueen laid down a sac bunt to move Villarreal into scoring position. Transfer
Jalen Denton then flew out to deep left field and Villarreal advanced to third.
With two outs,
Chris Shopbell stepped up to the plate and hit a single to left, scoring Villarreal and putting the Comets on the board.
That would be all the Comets offense could put together in game one and the Jimmies would tack on another run in the 4th and four more in the 7th, taking the game 6-1.
"
Derek Palmiere was outstanding. He had command of all of his pitches, he really pounded the zone," said Tomblin. "It was just a really good job by him."
Game 2: W 7-5
The Comets looked to make a statement in game two and they did just that in the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits.
Denton would lead the first off with a single and Shopbell would follow it up with a hit by pitch - his second of the day. Cam Goff loaded the bases up with a single to right.
Senior
Carson Lundmark smacked a two run single to right field scoring Denton and Shopbell.
Later on in the inning with two outs,
Zachary Evanochko hit a sac fly to center, scoring Goff to making the score 3-0.
Jamestown responded right away scoring two, however, the Comets would add another run in the bottom of the second when McQueen scored on a wild pitch.
Things were quiet for both teams until the bottom of the fifth when
Carson Lundmark hit a deep triple down the right field line scoring Goff. Lundmark would then score on a wild pitch to make the score 6-2.
Lundmark went 3-3 in game two with 3 RBI's, a triple and two stolen bases.
The Jimmies threatened the Comets lead in the top of the 6th inning when they would plate three runs cutting their deficit to one, however, the Comets would get out of the inning, tack on another run in the bottom of the 6th and take the game 7-5.
"The bats were good in the second game, we scored in four of six offensive innings," said Tomblin. " Our defense was solid and three freshman touched the mound in some big moments and did a really good job."
The Comets will take on Jamestown this Wednesday at Jack Brown Stadium. First pitch has been bumped up to 3:00pm.
