Valley City, N.D. - Mayville State Comets Women's Basketball headed down the road to Valley City State where they took on the Vikings for the first time this season.
In a thrilling game in the Bubble, Hughes put up 37 points and
Jes Mertens had 21 with 7 steals propelling the Comets to a 90-73 win over the Vikings.
1st Quarter:
- Hughes scores first for the Comets
- Low scoring first quarter; Vikings led 9-7 after the first five minutes
- Hughes is sent to the line and ties it up 11-11 with 1:30 left on the clock
- Comets were ahead 17-14 at the end of the quarter
2nd Quarter:

Annika Reierson kicks off the Comets hot offense with a layup at the 6:45 mark
- Zempel, Mertens, Hughes, Stark, Reierson would all score in the 2nd quarter
- Mertens dishes to Hughes and she nails a deep three to close out the half
- The Comets outscored the Vikings 24-11 and lead 41-25 at the half
3rd Quarter:
- Hughes opens the second half just how she closed the first - with a shot behind the arc; she has 13 in the quarter
- Mertens puts the Comets up by their largest lead of the game so far with 21 as she nails a shot behind the arc at 7:47 on the clock
- Mertens had 5 assists in the quarter
- Hughes ended the quarter with another three, the Comets lead 66-49 heading into the 4th
4th Quarter:
- The Vikings would find ways to score in the 4th, but the Comets would score right back and both teams would score 24 points in the quarter
- Hughes drives to the pain at puts the Comets up by 25, which would be their largest lead of the night
- The Vikings kept chipping away, eventually getting within 13, but would ultimately fall to the Comets 90-73

The Comets improve to 13-4 overall and sit in 3rd in the NSAA with a 3-2 record. They will take on #24 Jamestown next Friday, January 17th at 5:30pm. Jamestown is currently 2nd in the NSAA with a record of 3-1.
