Comets shut down No. 24 Jamestown in 77-72 win Saturday night

Mayville, N.D. - Mayville State Comets Women's Basketball looked to remain undefeated at home as the Lewy Lee would be electric in the NAIA Top 25 match up against the No. 24 Jamestown Jimmies.

Despite a late push by the Jimmies, the Comets were able to hold them off and get the 77-72 win to improve to 12-4 overall and 2-2 in the NSAA.

1st Quarter:
  • Page scores first 8 of 10 points; has 10 within the first 5 minutes
  • Comets lead 14-8 at 5 minutes
  • Neubauer nails a 3 to extend the lead 24-12 2 minutes remaining
  • Comets lead 25-19 after the first 10 minutes

2nd Quarter:
  • Jimmies inbound but turn it over, Comets can't execute, and Jimmies nail a shot behind the arc to get within 3, 25-22 Mayville State
  • Page gets the Comets first points of the quarter getting to 12 on the day
  • Stark nails a 3 at the 7-minute mark to get the Comets up by 10; 32-22
  • Mertens with a steal at 5 minutes sends her to the line to put the Comets up 12; 34-22
  • Comets lead 41-27 with 2 minutes remaining in the half
  • Mertens lays it in at the buzzer putting the Comets up 46-32 at the half
 
3rd Quarter:
  • Mertens gets a steal and a lay up to open the first drive of the 3rd
  • Page lays in her 18th point of the game and the Comets lead by 16
  • Stark nails a 3 and Mertens with her 5th steal of the game and the Jimmies take a much needed time out after the Comets get out to an early 11-2 start to the second half
  • Comets have a 16 point lead at the end of the 3rd; 66-50
  • Mertens has a double double with 12 points & 11 defensive rebounds
  • Page has 20 points
 
4th Quarter:
  • Mertens gets her 14th rebound of the game, all defensive rebounds
  • Jimmies force a number of turnovers on the Comets and cut their deficit to 12 with 4:30 remaining
  • Comets commit a foul sending the Jimmies to the line to make it a 9 point game; 68-59 Comets with 3:30 remaining
  • Page gets a double double with 10 rebounds 22 points; Comets up by 11
  • 2 minutes reaming and Comets lead 71-67
  • 49 seconds left, Stark heads to the line and sinks one to up the Comets up by 6
  • Jimmies bury a 3 to make it 73-70 & Mertens gets called for an offensive foul with 30 seconds remaining
  • Comets led by as much as 21 in the middle of the 4th
  • Mertens fouls out after attempting to block a 3 pointer, Jimmies head to the line for 3 shots down by 4 with 19 seconds remaining
  • Jimmies miss the first, nail the next 2, 74-72 Comets
  • Comets survive and get the win 77-72
