Comets Split with Blue Hawks to Close Out Fall Season

Mayville, N.D. — Mayville State Comets Baseball played their final double header of the fall season Wednesday afternoon, hosting the Dickinson State Blue Hawks. The Comets used a pair of big innings to top Dickinson State 5-3 in game one, then fell late in game two 7-3 at Scott Berry Field.

Game 1 W 5-3

After a slow offensive start, the Comets broke the game open in the middle frames and never looked back. Dickinson State struck first in the top of the fourth to give the Blue Hawks a brief 1–0 lead.

The Comets wasted no time answering. In the bottom half of the inning, J. Denton tied the game with a solo home run to left field, sparking the Mayville offense. Later in the same frame, J. McQueen lined a single through the right side, scoring H. Montgomery and K. Conway to give the Comets a 3–1 advantage.

Mayville extended its lead in the fifth inning when Conway drove in two more runs after a Blue Hawk defensive miscue, pushing the margin to 5–1. The insurance proved valuable, as Dickinson State mounted a late push in the seventh cutting the deficit to 5-3, but that was as close as the Blue Hawks would get.

On the mound, Aleks Koppel turned in a sharp start for the Comets, tossing four innings of one-run baseball while striking out seven and earning the win. Garret Lundmark closed out the contest in relief, recording five strikeouts over three innings to secure the save.

Offensively, Denton led the way with his home run, a walk, and a stolen base, while Conway added two RBIs. McQueen also chipped in with a pair of runs driven in during the fourth.

Game 2 L 3-7

Dickinson State opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first, but Mayville answered quickly. J. Denton stayed hot at the plate, driving in C. Goff with an RBI single to cut the lead to 2–1.

In the third, the Comets' bats came alive again. K. Conway launched a no-doubt solo home run to left field - his second long ball of the day - to even the score. Moments later, R. Gurney followed with a RBI single to center, plating Denton and giving Mayville State a 3–2 lead.

The Comets continued to battle at the plate and play clean defense through the middle innings, but Dickinson State regained control with a two-run homer in the sixth and another in the seventh to pull ahead for good.

Despite the loss, Mayville State received strong performances from its lineup. Conway led the way with a home run and two runs scored, while Denton added another RBI to cap off a productive doubleheader.

On the mound, Carson Steinmetz made the start for Mayville State, and several Comet relievers saw work out of the bullpen.
